Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre is giving Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a longer local voyage, extending its 70mm engagement through Aug. 20 after strong audience demand. The limited summer booking is now becoming a test of whether moviegoers will still travel for the big-screen experience.
The extension follows an engagement that began July 17. According to MyNewsLA.com, the Alex became the nation’s top-grossing theater for 70mm presentations of the film, with moviegoers traveling from across Southern California and beyond.
The theater’s official listing describes The Odyssey as a 70mm presentation at the historic venue, with tickets priced at $27. Showtimes and ticket information are posted through the Alex’s official listing.
For the Alex, this is also a cinematic reboot. The venue upgraded its projection system with 70mm film projectors and returned to first-run studio films after more than 35 years, making The Odyssey the centerpiece of a new chapter, as reported by MyNewsLA.com.
Why The 70mm Bet Is Working In Glendale
Demand for the format is not unique to Glendale, but the Alex’s position is unusual. The Los Angeles Times reported that only 25 U.S. theaters were showing The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm, while the Alex’s presentation uses conventional 70mm film with a different frame size and orientation.
To casual moviegoers, that technical distinction may matter less than the experience: a century-old theater, a physical film print and a movie built to feel enormous. The extended run gives Glendale more chances to turn that nostalgia into a recurring habit rather than a one-weekend stunt.
