NYU Langone Health has opened a new multispecialty practice in Fort Hamilton, bringing OB-GYN, urology, gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine and family planning services into a single two-level facility on 88th Street. The center centralizes physicians and providers who previously worked out of separate Brooklyn locations, part of what the health system describes as a coordinated-care approach for patients in southwest Brooklyn.
NYU Langone Ambulatory Care—Fort Hamilton sits at 437 88th Street, inside a newly constructed commercial building leased from developer Allied Properties, according to a LoopNet listing for the property. As reported by News 12 Brooklyn, the opening gives NYU Langone Health an opportunity to grow its department while keeping care quality on par with what patients would find in Manhattan.
Dr. Rosemary Ruggiero, an OB-GYN generalist with NYU Langone Health and a clinical assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, called the new space “beautiful, clean, large and awesome,” per the same News 12 report. She said patients can now receive routine obstetric exams and scans in the same facility where they see their doctor, and that having multiple specialties under one roof lets providers collaborate more easily.
A Health Hub Taking Shape Along 5th Avenue
The Fort Hamilton practice does not stand alone. It anchors a cluster of outpatient facilities that includes the NYU Langone Brooklyn Medical Arts Pavilion next door at 8714 5th Avenue and NYU Langone Radiology—Fort Hamilton directly across the street at 8721 5th Avenue, according to NYU Langone Health. That grouping puts primary care, diagnostic imaging and specialty services within a single block near 86th Street transit and major vehicular corridors.
Beyond general OB-GYN and urology, the health system notes that the Fort Hamilton location also offers gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, uro-oncology and endourology — subspecialties that expand access to advanced care for residents who might otherwise have had to travel into Manhattan. Dr. Frederick Gulmi, a urologist with NYU Langone Health and a clinical associate professor of urology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, is among the providers now based at the new site, per News 12's report.
Sunset Park Surgery Center Coming This Fall
The Fort Hamilton clinic is designed to feed into a much larger project underway a few miles south. NYU Langone Health plans to open a 120,000-square-foot ambulatory care center in Sunset Park this fall that will house outpatient surgery suites, physician practices and the Perlmutter Cancer Center directly across from its main Brooklyn hospital, according to NYU Langone Health and BKReader. News 12 reports that the planned Sunset Park facility will include surgical procedures, effectively giving patients seen at Fort Hamilton a nearby destination for follow-up operations.
That pairing reflects a wider strategy across the borough. NYU Langone Health operates more than 65 practice sites in Brooklyn anchored by NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, a 444-bed teaching hospital in Sunset Park formerly known as Lutheran Medical Center, per S&P Global Ratings. Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Oren Cahlon has said the system's goal in Brooklyn is decentralizing specialty programs — including local kidney and bone marrow transplant initiatives — to simplify care for borough residents, according to NYU Langone Health.
Part Of A Broader Expansion In Brooklyn
The Fort Hamilton opening follows other recent moves by the health system in the borough. In July, NYU Langone applied for state regulatory approval to add four inpatient bone marrow transplant beds at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, which would mark the city's first such unit south of Manhattan and the Bronx. That hospital also handles more than 4,000 births annually and holds Joint Commission advanced perinatal care certification along with Baby-Friendly USA status, according to NYU Langone Health, underpinning the maternal-fetal medicine services now offered at the new Fort Hamilton site.
The push toward outpatient care is not unique to NYU Langone. SUNY Downstate broke ground in March on a $1.1 billion modernization project centered on a new ambulatory care and surgery center in Brooklyn, according to SUNY Downstate, reflecting a regional shift away from routine procedures requiring hospital stays. Systemwide, NYU Langone Health now manages more than 12.4 million outpatient visits annually across 330 regional practice locations, backed by $15.4 billion in annual operating revenue, per NYU Langone Health — scale that helps explain the system's capacity to fund multiple simultaneous expansions across the borough.
For now, Fort Hamilton residents have a new, consolidated option for women's health and urological care close to home, with the promise of a full surgical complement arriving nearby once the Sunset Park center opens this fall.
