Nearly 250 pairs of Jordans disappeared from an Oak Park storage unit just days after a woman moved her belongings there, with the thief apparently cutting through the unit’s wire ceiling. The shoes were then allegedly rolled out in repeated trips, turning a routine move into a costly sneaker heist.
Qiana Wright said she placed her shoe collection and furniture in a Public Storage unit on July 18 while relocating. When she returned days later, almost all of her sneakers were gone, and WXYZ reported that surveillance footage shown to Wright captured someone repeatedly rolling the shoes out of the facility.
Wright said she collected the sneakers over several years, including classic Jordan releases that may be difficult or impossible to replace. She has insurance on the unit and hopes either to recover the shoes or receive reimbursement for the loss.
A Second Renter Says Her Unit Was Disturbed
Another tenant, Princess Gibbs, told WXYZ that her belongings had appeared disturbed over the past several months. She said only two of five pairs of heels remained in her unit and had not filed a police report, while the station said Public Storage did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Another Metro Detroit Sneaker Stash Was Hit
The Oak Park case comes shortly after a separate Detroit-area sneaker theft involving about 400 pairs stored for a youth giveaway. In its recent Detroit report, Hoodline said the shoes belonged to Northwest Goldberg Cares and were meant for a HoopFest event, with police investigating that theft as organizers scrambled to replace the missing inventory.
Insurance May Determine What Comes Next
Public Storage’s own guidance says customers must carry insurance on stored goods and that the company does not insure the contents of its units. The company offers the Orange Door Storage Insurance Program as one option, but Wright’s potential reimbursement will depend on her policy’s coverage, documentation and claim review.
Oak Park Public Safety is investigating the reported theft, and cameras are visible throughout the facility, according to WXYZ. No suspect, arrest or recovery had been announced in the station’s report, leaving Wright waiting to see whether the surveillance footage can help bring her collection home.
