A 70-year-old Orange County man was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Lionel Nelson Jr., ending a case that began with a confrontation over a house key and escalated into gunfire.
Jesse James Hill faces life in prison after the jury found him guilty in Nelson’s 2024 killing, according to ClickOrlando. Hill is scheduled to be sentenced on October 8.
The case dates to March 25, 2024, when deputies responded to a shooting near 24th Street and Lee Street in Orlando. Nelson was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died, prompting authorities to upgrade Hill’s initial attempted-murder charge to second-degree murder with a firearm, WFTV reported.
Key Dispute Preceded The Fatal Shooting
Investigators said Nelson was the subject of a domestic-violence injunction involving a person who was staying at Hill’s home. Nelson went to the residence to demand that the person return a house key, authorities said.
According to the trial account, Hill came outside carrying a rifle, and the two men got into a fight. Nelson tried to run away before Hill shot him in the head, prosecutors said.
Sentencing Will Determine Hill’s Punishment
State Attorney Monique Worrell said the verdict could bring Nelson’s loved ones “a measure of peace” while praising the jury, prosecutors and law-enforcement partners. The conviction resolves the question of Hill’s guilt, but the October sentencing hearing will determine whether he receives a life sentence, as reported by ClickOrlando.
