Overnight Shooting on South Hague Avenue Leaves Man Critical Near West High School

A man was rushed to the hospital in unstable condition after being shot overnight on South Hague Avenue in Columbus's Hilltop neighborhood, in an area that sits just blocks from West High School. Police were flagged down on the street and found the victim there, though officers have released no information on a motive or possible suspects.

According to myfox28columbus.com, the shooting was reported early Thursday morning, and the victim remained in unstable condition at the hospital as of the outlet's report. South Hague Avenue is located near West High School, which sits at 179 South Powell Avenue, roughly two blocks east of the shooting scene, according to Compass. No arrests have been announced, and the outlet's report did not include the victim's identity.

A Street Already on Police Radar

This is not the first time South Hague Avenue has drawn police attention this month. ShotSpotter technology detected gunfire in the 3400 block near 346 South Hague Avenue on August 17, sending officers to recover live rounds and shell casings from the roadway, per Citizen. Further back, two people were critically injured in the 300 block of South Hague Avenue near Fremont Street on February 6, 2026, marking the street as a recurring corridor for serious gun violence this year.

The overnight shooting also follows a chaotic few days for Hilltop law enforcement. Just two days earlier, on August 25, Columbus police officers serving a narcotics search warrant in the 200 block of North Harris Avenue were fired upon from inside a home, resulting in 17 people detained and multiple firearms recovered, according to WBNS 10TV. It is unclear whether investigators have connected either incident to the South Hague Avenue shooting.

A Cluster of Hilltop Shootings

The South Hague Avenue shooting adds to a string of violent incidents across Hilltop in recent weeks. Under Ohio Revised Code § 2903.11, a non-fatal shooting like the one on South Hague Avenue is generally prosecuted as felonious assault, a second-degree felony carrying 2 to 8 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines, with additional mandatory consecutive prison time if a firearm specification is proven, according to the Botnick Law Firm. No charges have been filed in this case, as no suspect has been identified.

New Substation Coming as Precinct Ages

The Hilltop is currently policed out of an aging Precinct 19 station on Sullivant Avenue, but that is set to change. Groundbreaking has occurred on a new $13.9 million, 13,500-square-foot substation at 1860 Sullivant Avenue, expected to open by early 2027 and house up to 85 officers along with dedicated detective interview rooms, according to WOSU. The current facility is roughly 50 years old.
