Las Vegas families are getting a weekend detour into Oz without having to follow the yellow brick road all the way to the Strip. Sphere and DISCOVERY Children’s Museum are bringing back Sphere Weekend, turning the downtown museum into a hands-on playground inspired by The Wizard of Oz at Sphere.
The second-annual event runs this Saturday and Sunday, with activities for guests of all ages included with general museum admission, according to FOX5 Las Vegas. Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a noon-to-5 p.m. schedule Sunday.
A Yellow Brick Road Built For Curious Kids
The lineup leans heavily into hands-on science: children can engineer a protective device for the Apple Drop Challenge, watch a live tornado generator demonstration, and code robots along a Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City, according to the museum’s event listing. Other stations include digital animation, a take-home Orbi character, and a drone obstacle course designed to show how drone technology is used at Sphere.
A Birthday Party For Oz With A STEAM Agenda
The weekend also marks the first anniversary season of The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, which opened in Las Vegas on August 28, 2025. Sphere Entertainment Co. described the production as an immersive version of the classic film, using the venue’s wraparound display, spatial audio and environmental effects to put audiences inside the story.
The partnership is meant to be more than a themed weekend. Sphere is entering the second year of a five-year investment in DISCOVERY’s youth education programs, and Rich Constable, the company’s global head of government affairs and social impact, said curiosity sparked by wonder can help inspire future innovators, FOX5 Las Vegas reported.
Families can find the event at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum during the museum’s regular weekend hours, with the special programming covered by general admission, as outlined by the official event page. The only thing visitors need to bring beyond admission is a little patience for the inevitable robot traffic jam on the road to Oz.
