Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker will sit down with fans at a Charlotte Observer subscriber event next month, giving south Charlotte football faithful a rare chance to hear directly from a player who just cashed a $35 million contract extension. The all-ages event is set for Tuesday, September 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Olde Mecklenburg Biergarten and Restaurant at Ballantyne, with tickets priced at $10 through Eventbrite.
The event, hosted by The Charlotte Observer, will be led by longtime columnist Scott Fowler and lead Panthers beat reporter Alex Zietlow, who will guide a question-and-answer session with Coker as the Panthers barrel toward the 2026 season. Fowler has written for the paper since 1994 and has collected 20 national Associated Press Sports Editors awards over his career, according to the Observer. Zietlow joined the newsroom in August 2022 and co-hosts the Observer's weekly team podcast, Processing Blue, which covers inside-the-locker-room news.
From Undrafted Rookie to $35 Million Extension
Coker's path to the microphone is itself part of the draw. He signed with Carolina in 2024 as an undrafted free agent and has since played in 22 games over his first two seasons, producing 65 catches for 872 yards and five touchdowns, per the Observer's reporting. In June, the Panthers rewarded that production with a three-year contract extension worth $35 million, with incentives that could push the deal to $41 million, according to CBS Sports.
That leap didn't come out of nowhere. At Holy Cross from 2020 to 2023, Coker became the program's all-time leader in career receiving yards with 2,715 and career touchdown receptions with 31, and he led the entire FCS with 15 touchdown catches in his final season, according to Holy Cross Athletics. He was a 2023 Walter Payton Award finalist and consensus FCS All-American before going undrafted the following spring.
A Playoff Breakout Against the Rams
Coker's most memorable NFL moment so far came in Carolina's playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2025, when he led the Panthers offense with nine catches for 134 yards and one touchdown, per the Observer. That output, per CBS Sports, marked a postseason single-game benchmark for young Panthers receivers and underscored how central Coker had become to Bryce Young's passing attack.
His importance has only grown since. A season-ending knee injury to rookie Chris Brazzell II during training camp last month left Coker and rookie Tetairoa McMillan as Carolina's top pass-catching options heading into 2026, as Hoodline previously reported. That shakeup followed Carolina's trade of veteran receiver Adam Thielen back to Minnesota last August, a move that had already opened up starting opportunities for younger targets like Coker.

The venue itself reflects south Charlotte's rapid commercial growth. Olde Mecklenburg Brewery's Ballantyne location, which opened in May 2024, spans 14,000 square feet of indoor space plus a one-acre biergarten, making it the largest brewery venue in south Charlotte, according to 6AM City. Founded in 2009 in Charlotte's Lower South End, OMB is the city's oldest craft brewery and brews strictly under the 1516 German Purity Law, using only water, malt, hops, and yeast.
The brewery serves as an anchor tenant within The Bowl at Ballantyne, a 20-acre entertainment and dining development built by Northwood Investors as part of the larger Ballantyne Reimagined project, according to goBallantyne. The district features outdoor gathering spaces alongside regional dining brands, positioning it as one of the area's newer hubs for exactly the kind of community sports event the Observer is planning.
A Franchise on the Rise, On and Off the Field
The kick-off event arrives as the Panthers organization itself continues to grow in value even amid roster turnover. Forbes valued the franchise at nearly $6 billion in August 2025, reflecting a doubling in worth since David Tepper bought the team in 2018 for $2.275 billion, as Hoodline reported last year. For fans, though, the appeal of September 1 is simpler: a chance to grab a beer in Ballantyne and ask one of the team's rising stars what comes next.
