Parma police are asking for the public's help finding an 80-year-old woman who has gone missing from the Cuyahoga County suburb. Officers have not released additional details about when or where she was last seen, but they are actively working to locate her.
What Parma Police Have Said So Far
According to FOX 8 News, Parma police are looking for the missing woman and have turned to the public for assistance in the search. The station, which maintains its broadcast transmitter directly in Parma, has not published further specifics on the woman's description, health condition, or direction of travel as of Friday morning.
It remains unclear whether Parma police have requested a formal Endangered Missing Adult Alert through the state's Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Under Ohio law, that kind of alert can be requested when a missing person is 65 or older or mentally impaired and faces a credible threat of serious bodily harm or death, according to the Ohio Association of Broadcasters. That threshold means the alerts are reserved for cases with clear evidence of danger rather than routine disappearances.
Why Ohio's Adult Alert System Works Differently Than Amber Alerts
Unlike Amber Alerts issued for missing children, Ohio's Endangered Missing Adult Alerts do not trigger emergency broadcast tones or Wireless Emergency Alerts on cell phones. Instead, the Ohio Association of Broadcasters notes that notifications are distributed through text alerts, email, social media, highway message signs, and news organizations, meaning residents largely learn about these cases through local news coverage and social sharing rather than a phone alarm.
When the system is used, it has a strong track record. The Ohio Attorney General's Office reported that 146 Endangered Missing Adult Alerts were issued across 38 counties in 2022, and all but one of those missing people were ultimately located or safely returned home, per a May 2023 report from the Ohio Attorney General's Office. The statewide program has been in place since 2008.
Parma's Older Population and Past Cases
Parma has a notably older population than much of the country. U.S. Census Bureau estimates from the 2024 American Community Survey show that 19.8% of Parma's roughly 79,000 residents are 65 or older, a higher share than the national average, according to Census Reporter. Parma is the seventh most populous municipality in Ohio and spans 20 square miles within Cuyahoga County.
This is not the first time Parma has issued a public call for help finding a missing senior. In August 2015, Parma police and local media issued an Endangered Missing Adult Alert for a 68-year-old Parma woman with dementia, who was located safely by authorities shortly after the alert went out, per WKYC-TV. Parma police also operate under Jonathan's Law, which requires Ohio law enforcement agencies to maintain written missing person investigation policies and immediately enter missing person files into the National Crime Information Center database, per the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
Cuyahoga County also maintains a dedicated Missing Persons Liaison within the Sheriff's Office to help municipal departments like Parma police coordinate and track cases across jurisdictions, according to Cleveland Missing.
