A pedestrian was killed early Monday morning after being struck on the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Arsenal Street in south St. Louis, prompting police to shut down the entire freeway during the morning commute while investigators worked the scene. The crash happened around 5:10 a.m., according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, which confirmed one person died at the location.
Accident Reconstruction investigators were dispatched to the scene, and the Missouri Department of Transportation redirected northbound traffic off the freeway for hours as officers processed the crash, according to First Alert 4. As reported by Fox 2, MoDOT rerouted commuter traffic off I-55 during the height of the morning rush as the closure stretched on. Police advised drivers to avoid the area entirely while the investigation continued, and First Alert 4 reported the story was still developing as more details emerged.
Why Someone Was on a Controlled-Access Freeway at 5 A.M.
Investigators have not said why the pedestrian was present on the freeway itself. Under Missouri law, Interstate 55 is a controlled-access highway, meaning pedestrians are legally barred from walking along its travel lanes except at designated entrances and exits. State transportation officials have separately noted that a notable share of interstate pedestrian deaths statewide involve motorists who had exited disabled vehicles, though it remains unknown whether that applies to Monday's crash.
The stretch of freeway near Arsenal Street, which connects I-55 to the Soulard and Benton Park neighborhoods, has a troubled history. The same section of northbound I-55 was shut down during a morning commute back in June 2018 following another fatal pedestrian crash. In January 2022, a car ran off the roadway near Soulard and struck a tree along the same corridor, killing the driver and critically injuring two passengers.
A Corridor Reshaped by Ongoing Bridge Work
MoDOT safety and traffic reviews of I-55 near Arsenal and Cherokee streets have found that ongoing bridge work and lane shifts have altered merging conditions and increased vehicle density during rush hours. Those changing conditions add another layer of risk to a corridor that already carries heavy commuter volume each morning.
Part of a Grim Statewide Pattern
Monday's death adds to a pattern that has alarmed state and regional safety officials for the past two years. Missouri recorded a record 148 pedestrian fatalities statewide in 2024, a 16% jump from the prior year, even as overall traffic deaths in the state declined, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
In the St. Louis region specifically, pedestrians accounted for a quarter of all traffic fatalities, with at least 169 people killed in traffic collisions through early autumn 2025, per KSDK. Regional pedestrian deaths have roughly doubled between 2010 and 2025, the station reported. That data helped drive MoDOT and the Missouri State Highway Patrol to launch the Heads Up St. Louis campaign last October, aimed at boosting driver awareness and pedestrian visibility amid elevated nighttime crash risks and speeding on high-capacity routes.
Local advocacy group Trailnet, in its June 2026 State of Our Streets report, found that 37 pedestrians and cyclists were killed across St. Louis City and County in 2025, down from a combined record of 59 the year before. Trailnet's analysis also found that high vehicle speeds and multi-lane arterial designs contribute to more than 80% of pedestrian fatalities in the city, underscoring how freeway interchanges like the one at Arsenal Street present elevated risk.
A Recurring Scene on St. Louis Roads
Monday's fatality is the latest in a string of pedestrian deaths across the city in recent weeks. Hoodline previously reported on a second fatal hit-and-run in 10 days on Natural Bridge that also drew SLMPD Accident Reconstruction investigators, along with a fatal crash on Hall Street and another deadly nighttime crossing on Gravois in south St. Louis. Whether the driver involved in Monday's crash remained at the scene has not been disclosed, and SLMPD has not released further details on the circumstances that put the victim on the interstate before sunrise.
