An 8-year-old Pennsylvania girl is being credited with helping save her grandmother after a nap turned into a medical emergency. Gabriela Sparks recognized that her grandmother was unresponsive and knew the most important next step: getting help.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, Sparks called for help after her grandmother suffered a diabetic seizure. The report by KDKA-TV's Barry Pintar says the child used her knowledge of how to call for help to get her grandmother assistance.
Why Diabetic Seizures Can Become Emergencies
Diabetes can make a seizure especially dangerous when it is tied to severe low blood sugar. The CDC explains that severe hypoglycemia can cause confusion, loss of consciousness and seizures, sometimes leaving a person unable to treat themselves. The agency also advises calling 911 when someone with diabetes loses consciousness, while warning bystanders not to restrain the person or put anything in their mouth.
Sparks' response offered a simple but crucial lesson: When a medical crisis leaves an adult unable to respond, a child's ability to recognize danger and summon help can make an enormous difference. In this case, that knowledge helped turn a frightening family emergency into a survival story.
