The city closed the tavern Tuesday after a routine inspection turned up pest activity throughout the building, then cleared it to reopen Wednesday once a follow-up check confirmed the problem had been handled.
According to WISN Channel 12 Milwaukee, health officials identified pest activity in various areas of the establishment during Tuesday's inspection, prompting the Milwaukee Health Department to shut the restaurant and bar down. The department returned Wednesday for a follow-up inspection and approved Dugout 54 to reopen after determining the immediate concerns had been resolved.
Health Department Pledges to Keep Watching
In a statement on the closure, the health department said, "MHD will continue working with the establishment to ensure compliance is maintained," according to CBS 58. The station's report confirmed the same Tuesday-to-Wednesday timeline, noting inspectors moved quickly once the establishment addressed the pest issue.
A Neighborhood Fixture Near the Ballpark
The bar sits at 5328 W. Blue Mound Rd., a space with a longer history as a Milwaukee tavern. Karlis "Chuck" Vecitis established Dugout 54 there in 2015, taking over a location that had previously been home to Burke's Irish Castle and Derry Hegarty's Irish Pub, according to archived Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporting.
The building itself is a multi-use property, with the ground-floor bar and restaurant sitting below four one-bedroom apartments upstairs, per Urban Milwaukee. The bar has leaned into a more ambitious pub menu in recent years, too; the same outlet's dining review this summer praised dishes like ale-infused cavatappi mac and cheese with barbecue pulled pork, Reuben rolls, and a blackened salmon salad.
32 Taps and a Shuttle to the Ballpark
Dugout 54 markets itself as a full sports bar and gastropub with 32 craft beer taps, according to Travel Wisconsin's business listing, which also notes the bar runs shuttle rides for fans heading to Milwaukee Brewers games and opens daily at 11 a.m. That shuttle service ramps up considerably during the postseason.
Sports bars along Blue Mound Road, Dugout 54 among them, scale up staffing, inventory and shuttle runs whenever the Brewers make a deep playoff push, FOX6 News Milwaukee reported last October. The bar ran three continuous shuttle routes during the 2025 NLDS, per that report.
Part of a Broader Citywide Pattern
The temporary shutdown fits a pattern the city sees repeatedly. Milwaukee's food safety inspection division conducts more than 10,000 inspections annually and issues 250 to 300 orders to cease operations when inspectors find imminent public health hazards, Hoodline previously reported, including at a west-side Milwaukee grocery store.
Under city code, an Order to Cease Operations immediately halts regulated food service and strips an establishment's routine health placard until a reinspection confirms violations have been corrected, according to Urban Milwaukee. Operators who disagree with a closure can file administrative appeals under state statutes or local ordinances, the outlet noted. East Side eatery Beans & Barley faced a similar order over priority violations last year and, like Dugout 54, passed a follow-up inspection to reopen within 24 hours.

Dugout 54 joins a run of prominent Milwaukee dining spots hit with pest-related closures this year. Historic Third Ward restaurant The Wicked Hop was shuttered in February after inspectors found dead American cockroaches in a shared basement and live roaches in food prep areas, according to FOX6 News Milwaukee; it reopened after deep cleaning and pest management. Hoodline separately reported on inspectors sidelining Blue Bat Kitchen on the Third Ward RiverWalk and benching Third Ward hotspot DanDan while both awaited reinspection.
