A shooting inside a home in the 15900 block of Cameron Road near Pflugerville left one person dead and another in critical condition Wednesday night, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Travis County Sheriff's Office deputies say everyone involved in the altercation knew each other, has been identified, and is accounted for — but the investigation remains active.
Deputies Rushed to Scene Near Austin Executive Airport
Emergency crews were dispatched to the reported shooting at approximately 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, with law enforcement noting the residence sits near the Austin Executive Airport, according to KVUE. Per investigators, the altercation occurred inside the residence and involved people who knew each other, and shots wounded two people caught up in the confrontation, as reported by KEYE. A person at the scene drove both wounded individuals to a hospital, per the sheriff's office.
One of the gunshot victims died at the hospital, per the sheriff's office, with KVUE reporting the time of death as 10:51 p.m. Wednesday — roughly three and a half hours after deputies were first dispatched. The other victim remained in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office has released no identities of those involved.
No Arrests Yet, But Sheriff's Office Says No Danger to Public
As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made, per the sheriff's office, which described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there is no danger to the public. The lack of immediate custody does not necessarily signal a closed case. Under Texas Penal Code Sections 9.31 and 9.32, a person is legally justified in using deadly force in self-defense inside a residence, with no duty to retreat, if they reasonably believe it is immediately necessary and did not provoke the confrontation, according to FindLaw. Fatal shootings arising from altercations among known parties where self-defense claims may exist are routinely presented to a county grand jury for review, a process that determines whether formal charges are ultimately warranted, per FOX 7 Austin.
Rural Corridor Handled by County, Not City Police
Because the property falls outside Pflugerville's city limits, the case is being handled by the Travis County Sheriff's Office rather than municipal police. The sheriff's office holds primary law enforcement authority over unincorporated Travis County, an area covering roughly 619 square miles and 175,000 residents outside municipal police boundaries, according to county records. The 15900 block of Cameron Road also falls within the territory of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2, which handles fire and emergency medical first-response across 77 square miles of northeast Travis County serving more than 160,000 residents.
The stretch of Cameron Road near Cele Road has its own layered history — it's home to the site of the 130-year-old Cele Store, a landmark that closed for good in March 2024, marking the rural-to-suburban transition zone that defines this part of the county. In August 2022, another major shooting occurred along the extended Cameron Road corridor near U.S. Highway 290, when a fleeing carjacking suspect was shot by responding law enforcement; a grand jury later cleared the officers involved, per KVUE.
Part of a Broader Pattern in Northeast Travis County
Wednesday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents the sheriff's office has investigated in the area this year. In May, three family members were killed in a domestic shooting inside a home on Civorno Drive near Pflugerville, with a family member later charged with capital murder, according to FOX 7 Austin. On July 5, deputies also responded to a double homicide shooting in the 9700 block of Reservoir Court in northeast Travis County, outside a local nightclub venue, per the Travis County Sheriff's Office.
The Cameron Road case remains under active investigation, and the sheriff's office has not indicated when it might be presented to a grand jury. For now, investigators say everyone connected to the shooting has been identified and accounted for, even as the question of whether charges will follow stays unresolved.
