Philadelphia is heading into a hot, humid Friday after waking to clear skies and temperatures around 77 degrees. Patchy fog may linger until 9 a.m., but the air will turn increasingly oppressive as temperatures climb to 92 degrees and the heat index reaches 102.
Storms Could Arrive By Late Afternoon
After a mostly sunny start, scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop from midafternoon into the evening, with a 30% chance of rain. Some storms could produce very heavy downpours and locally damaging wind gusts, particularly along and northwest of I-95, while brief intense rain could cause street flooding.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday for Philadelphia and parts of southeastern Pennsylvania, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 103 degrees. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours.
Saturday Stays Hot Before Sunday’s Brief Break
Friday night will remain muggy, with showers and thunderstorms likely before 1 a.m. and a low around 75; some storms could again bring heavy rain, with totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch possible.
Saturday will be nearly as hot, reaching 91 degrees with a heat index near 101 and a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Another round of storms is possible Saturday night, with rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch before a sunnier, slightly drier Sunday reaches 92 degrees.
Heat Returns Monday And Tuesday
Sunday’s lower humidity will offer only a short break, as highs rise to around 93 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Storm chances return both days, and a stronger front arriving late Tuesday or Wednesday should finally ease some of the heat and humidity, though Wednesday could still bring showers with a high near 89.
