It marks a shift from prior years, when the Pinellas Park Gateway Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual backpack distribution at the St. Petersburg College Health Education Center on 66th Street North, according to the chamber's earlier Facebook posts.
The drive is officially known as the Dr. Daniel Strauss Memorial Backpack Event, honoring a local leader's legacy of equipping students with tools to feel confident and prepared, per the Pinellas Park Gateway Chamber of Commerce. The chamber, founded in 1915 and operating out of Park Boulevard, manages the event through its 501(c)(3) Pinellas Park Foundation. It was the chamber that organized this year's backpack drive alongside the city.
New Venue Offers More Room for Families
The Pinellas Park Performing Arts Center, converted by the city from a former church into a public arts facility, features a 4,779-square-foot main event hall and a 600-seat auditorium, according to the City of Pinellas Park. That added space fits a broader goal of accommodating families from VPK through college under one roof, rather than the smaller footprint used in past years at the health education center.
Beyond backpacks and supplies, organizers have packed the day with activities. The event includes the fire department, community policing and K-9 demonstrations, live music, and activities from the American Heart Association, along with food, games, and prizes for kids. Support for the giveaway comes from the Pinellas Park Medical District, Simply Centered, Orlando Health, National University of Health Sciences, and WM Waste Management, per the event listing.
