The Plaza Hotel & Casino has opened a dedicated high-limit slot room on its main casino floor, a 2,000-square-foot space with 53 machines built for players who bet hundreds of dollars a spin. The room comes with its own concierge desk, a complimentary nonalcoholic beverage station, lounge seating and round-the-clock cocktail service, giving Downtown Las Vegas' highest rollers a private corner of the casino to call their own.
The space had sat walled off and largely unused since the pandemic before Plaza leadership decided to revive it, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Plaza CEO Jonathan Jossel said the property first noticed a shift in its clientele years ago. “We recognized around four or five years ago that the customer coming to downtown was growing and changing,” Jossel said, adding that higher-end gamblers wanted an elevated service experience and privacy.
A Room Designed to Blend In, Not Wall Off
Rather than fully separating high-limit players from the rest of the floor, the new room aims to preserve some connection to the casino's buzz while still offering seclusion. The design borrows carpet from Oscar's Steakhouse and chandelier inspiration from fixtures found elsewhere on the property, tying the space visually to the rest of the Plaza. The lounge area lets players and their companions sit, socialize and watch sports between spins, and the room can be converted for private events with food and beverage service.
The concierge desk assists eligible players with hotel check-in, restaurant reservations, room upgrades, pool cabanas and other requests, while a dedicated ATM and ticket-redemption machine round out the amenities. Modern slot machines are largely multi-denomination now, and bets can reach hundreds of dollars per spin — a shift that has pushed casinos to rethink how they serve their biggest spenders.
Cashless Tech Aims to Keep Players in Their Seats
The high-limit machines run on Acres cashless gaming technology, which lets players access funds directly through mobile devices, including electronic payment options like Apple Pay. That mobile-funding capability builds on a Nevada Gaming Commission rule change approved in January 2022 that let casino patrons set up and fund cashless wagering accounts remotely before ever reaching a physical cage, according to The Nevada Independent.
The machines also feature unattended jackpot processing, which reduces the wait time casino employees need to complete jackpot payouts. That matters more than ever for players at these stakes, Jossel explained, because big spenders can trigger jackpot reporting thresholds surprisingly often. “If you're betting $250 a spin, you're hitting $2,000 potentially very frequently,” Jossel said, noting that federal slot jackpot tax reporting still occurs when applicable even with the faster processing.
A Tax Threshold Frozen Since the Carter Era Finally Moves
That $2,000 figure is not arbitrary. The federal IRS Form W-2G reporting threshold for slot jackpots rose from $1,200 to $2,000 on January 1, 2026, under provisions of the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act — the first inflation-adjusted increase to the threshold since 1977, according to SBC Americas. For nearly 50 years, casinos had to pause play and process a hand-pay any time a jackpot crossed $1,200, despite decades of slot inflation pushing bet sizes far beyond what that threshold was designed for.
The higher ceiling means fewer manual interruptions for high-denomination players, but it arrives alongside a less favorable change for their tax bills. Separate federal tax legislation enacted in 2025 capped the gambling loss deduction at 90% of total winnings starting in tax year 2026, replacing the previous rule that let gamblers offset 100% of their losses, per RSM US. The upshot is that high-frequency players can now face a net tax liability even after a session where they roughly break even.
Downtown's Profit Surge Fuels the Reinvestment
The Plaza's bet on high-limit play lands amid a broader financial turnaround for Downtown Las Vegas. Nevada Gaming Control Board data for fiscal year 2025 showed Downtown casinos posted $159.2 million in total net income, edging out the Las Vegas Strip's combined $154.2 million after Strip profits sank 81.2% year-over-year, the Review-Journal reported. Downtown properties also generated a record $951 million in gaming revenue during 2025, a 2.1% increase over the previous year, according to SiGMA World.
That profitability has given Downtown operators room to chase upscale amenities once associated mainly with the Strip. The Plaza's new room follows a similar move by the Cosmopolitan's high-limit slot lounge and by Durango, which opened its own exclusive high-limit room in December. Jossel framed the Plaza's approach as steady growth rather than a sudden pivot. “We are just getting started,” he said, adding that additional food-and-beverage concepts are planned for the property.
More Changes Already Underway at the Plaza
The high-limit room is the latest in a string of additions at the Plaza, which has also added the outdoor Carousel Bar, PinkBox Doughnuts and a smoke-free gaming area in recent years. A Five Guys location is opening on the south end of the property, adding to the casino's growing food-and-beverage lineup after the closure of the Sand Dollar Downtown live-music venue and cocktail bar in December. Jossel described the strategy as continued reinvestment rather than change for its own sake.
Players in the new room can also chase a bigger prize than a jackpot: those who earn at least 1,000 slot points there qualify for a chance to win a Virgin cruise for two. The room will also host the Travel Ruby slot tournament on August 28-29, which carries a $10,000 prize pool. Built on the site of Las Vegas' original 1906 train depot, the Plaza opened in 1971 as the 504-room Union Plaza Hotel and once housed the only operational Amtrak terminal ever located inside a hotel-casino, serving the Desert Wind line until Amtrak pulled out of Southern Nevada in 1997 — a piece of history that now shares floor space with a room designed for the state's highest-stakes slot players.
