Portland Double Shooting Wounds Two Men, Suspect Detained Near Circle K

Two men were shot within moments of each other Wednesday afternoon in Louisville's Portland neighborhood, with one wounded in the leg outside a business and a second struck in the back at a separate business across the street. A person has been detained in connection with the shootings, and Louisville Metro Police believe the two incidents are connected.

According to WDRB, officers responded around 2 p.m. to the 2100 block of Portland Avenue after reports of a shooting. Both men were taken to UofL Hospital, and their injuries are described as non-life-threatening. As of Wednesday evening, the investigation remained ongoing and no charges had yet been filed, though WDRB reports charges are pending.

The dispatch details point to two nearby commercial properties. WHAS11 reports that MetroSafe received the initial 911 call at 2:03 p.m. describing a double shooting at the Circle K store at 2100 Portland Avenue, with a second victim found across the street.

A Neighborhood Under LMPD's First Division

The stretch of Portland Avenue where the shootings happened falls under the Louisville Metro Police Department's First Division, headquartered at 416 N. 29th Street, which also patrols Downtown, Russell, Butchertown and Phoenix Hill, per the department's own division information. This is not the first gunfire reported on this stretch of Portland Avenue in recent weeks. West End Neighborhoods Carry a Disproportionate Share of Violence

The Portland shooting also lands alongside broader citywide shooting trends.

That local reality sits alongside citywide numbers that Mayor Craig Greenberg touted in July, when he announced a 22% drop in homicides and a 28% decline in non-fatal shootings during 2025 — the lowest total number of shootings recorded in the city in more than a decade. The administration's Safe Louisville strategy is aiming for 15% annual reductions in violent crime through 2030.

Possible Charges Under Kentucky Law

Should charges follow, Kentucky law offers a range of potential felony counts for shootings like this one. Under Kentucky Revised Statutes § 508.010, first-degree assault is a Class B felony carrying 10 to 20 years in prison when a person intentionally causes serious physical injury with a deadly weapon or wantonly creates a grave risk of death, according to the Farra Law Firm. Prosecutors could file a lesser charge.

Both shooting victims were taken to UofL Hospital. Wednesday's shootings mark the second violent incident in the same stretch of Portland in the past three weeks, adding to a summer that has already drawn scrutiny to gun violence in the neighborhood.
