
A 12-year-old acro-dancer from Rancho Cucamonga walked out of a Loma Linda rehabilitation hospital on her own two feet this week, months after a headstand during dance practice triggered a rare spinal cord stroke that doctors feared might leave her unable to walk at all. Morgan Lopez suffered the stroke in May, and by Tuesday she had recovered strength and mobility in almost every muscle in her body.
Morgan was practicing a dance routine in May when she attempted a headstand and immediately felt acute neck pain, according to WGN-TV. What followed was a spinal cord stroke, a condition that cuts off blood flow to the spine and, according to the Cleveland Clinic, accounts for less than 1% of all strokes. The rare vascular event can cause fatal outcomes or permanent disabilities, and in Morgan's case it compromised her respiratory area, an especially dangerous complication given that spinal strokes most commonly affect the anterior spinal artery, which the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes supplies blood to the front two-thirds of the spinal cord and can trigger sudden motor paralysis below the site of injury when disrupted.
Her parents, Jamie and Felipe Lopez, were told their daughter might not walk again. Instead, Morgan underwent three months of intense daily physical therapy and strength training, drawing on support from her dance friends and family throughout the ordeal.
A Recovery Doctors Called Rare
Morgan's diagnosis fits a pattern documented in pediatric stroke research: sudden mechanical neck movements or extreme spinal extension during athletic and acrobatic activities can trigger spinal cord strokes in otherwise healthy adolescents, according to guidance published by the International Pediatric Stroke Study. That kind of micro-trauma can produce fibrocartilaginous embolisms that obstruct blood flow to the spine, the group's research indicates.
What makes Morgan's outcome especially notable is how rarely it happens. A 2025 clinical review published in Pediatric Neurology found that pediatric spinal cord strokes are predominantly idiopathic or trauma-related, and that half of studied pediatric patients continue to suffer persistent motor deficits long after the initial event. Most pediatric spinal strokes occur in children without traditional cardiovascular risk factors, which underscores how unpredictable Morgan's injury was in the first place.
Jamie Lopez said her family had faith and hope in Morgan throughout the recovery process. Morgan told KTLA she draws strength from wanting to dance again, and Felipe Lopez recalled that Morgan smiled because standing turned out to be easier than she had expected.
Three Months at Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital
Morgan's rehabilitation played out at Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Loma Linda, an 81-bed facility that includes a dedicated 25-bed pediatric acute rehabilitation unit alongside specialized subacute beds, according to the California Department of Health Care Access and Information. The hospital, founded in 1971 as a small residential facility, helped pioneer California's pediatric subacute care licensing model in 1991 in partnership with state developmental health agencies.
The facility holds a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 5-Star rating for subacute care and has maintained Joint Commission Gold Seal accreditation for 25 consecutive years. On Tuesday, Morgan walked out of Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Loma Linda on her own, marking the end of an inpatient stay that once seemed like it might end very differently.
Looking Ahead to the Long Beach Marathon
Morgan now plans to return home and re-acclimate to her active lifestyle, and she plans to continue treatment at another hospital as she keeps building strength. She hopes continued rehabilitation will make her strong enough to eventually dance on stage again and attend school.
One especially personal goal awaits in October: Felipe Lopez plans to run alongside his daughter in the Long Beach Marathon. Their case adds to a broader medical picture in which pediatric stroke incidence rose slightly between 1990 and 2019 even as childhood stroke mortality dropped significantly, a shift that has moved much of the pediatric medical focus toward long-term rehabilitation rather than acute survival alone, according to a global population study published in American Heart Association journals. Nationally, stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability, with more than 795,000 cases occurring annually, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — a scale that makes Morgan's rare diagnosis and rapid recovery stand out even further against the broader landscape of stroke care in the United States.
