Riverside Felon Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Stabbing Near UC Riverside Campus

A 32-year-old Moreno Valley man accused of fatally stabbing another man during a street dispute just blocks from UC Riverside pleaded not guilty this week to first-degree murder and related charges. Elias Julian Calderon was arraigned before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gail O’Rane, denying charges that include using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony and an allegation that he is a prior-strike felon.

The stabbing happened on June 15 at Chicago and University avenues, a location roughly four blocks north of the UC Riverside campus, according to MyNewsLA.com. Riverside Police Department Detective Steve Espinosa said Calderon and the victim, identified by police only as a local man, were involved in an unspecified dispute before Calderon pulled a knife and stabbed the victim at least once. Witnesses called 911, and patrol officers and paramedics reached the scene within minutes.

Victim Died at Riverside Community Hospital

The wounded man was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital, where he later died in the emergency room, per the same account relayed by police. Riverside Police Department records show emergency dispatchers had initially been called at approximately 11:37 a.m. to help Riverside Fire Department personnel with an adult male suffering an unknown injury near University Avenue, west of Chicago Avenue, before the incident was confirmed as a fatal stabbing, according to a Riverside Police Department announcement. The department said Robbery-Homicide Unit Detectives Stanley Hua and Nicholas Cantino were assigned to lead the investigation and asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact them directly.

Detective Espinosa said Calderon fled the scene after the stabbing, but Robbery-Homicide Unit investigators quickly developed leads pointing to him as the alleged assailant. Patrol officers tracked him to a property on Hulen Place in Riverside and took him into custody without incident about six hours after the stabbing. Hulen Place and nearby Massachusetts Avenue form the corridor that serves as Riverside’s centralized homeless services campus, home to facilities including the Path of Life Community Shelter and the Multi-Service Access Center, according to a City of Riverside planning document.

Prior Felony and Strike Allegations

Court records show Calderon has a felony conviction from within the last decade, and prosecutors charged him as a prior-strike felon following his arrest. Under California Penal Code Section 187, a first-degree murder conviction carries 25 years to life in state prison, a term that can be extended under California’s Three Strikes law for defendants with prior qualifying violent or serious felony convictions, according to the Kann California Defense Group. Prosecutors also added a sentence-enhancing allegation for personal use of a deadly weapon; under Penal Code Section 12022(b)(1), using a knife or other dangerous weapon during a felony carries a mandatory, consecutive one-year enhancement, per the Shouse Law Group.

Calderon is currently held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center, the maximum-security jail that has served as Riverside County’s primary booking and pretrial holding facility since it opened in downtown Riverside in 1989, according to the Riverside County Sheriff. Judge O’Rane has scheduled a felony settlement conference for October 16 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

A Rare Homicide in a Neighborhood Near Campus

The stabbing occurred against a backdrop of relatively stable homicide numbers in Riverside. The city recorded 11 homicides in both 2023 and 2024, down sharply from 26 in 2022, according to crime data presented by Police Chief Larry Gonzalez and reported by The Raincross Gazette. Riverside County as a whole logged a violent crime rate of 300.8 incidents per 100,000 residents in 2024, per state Department of Justice data cited by Shape Riverside County. Statewide, homicides fell 13.5% in 2024, continuing a decline from the pandemic-era surge, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

Police have not released the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin, and the exact nature of the dispute that preceded the stabbing remains unclear. Calderon’s next court appearance is set for the October settlement conference, where the case against him is expected to move forward.
