Raleigh is waking under cloudy skies and temperatures around 78°F, but the gray start will give way to a dangerous heat surge Friday. Highs are expected near 97°F, with the heat index reaching about 106°F before late-day thunderstorms move into the forecast.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Friday Evening
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday across much of central North Carolina, including Raleigh. The National Weather Service in Raleigh says heat-index values may reach 105 to 109, making strenuous outdoor work and exercise risky during the afternoon.
Showers and thunderstorms become possible after 2 p.m., with the best chance from midafternoon into evening and a 30% chance overall. Some storms could produce damaging wind gusts, so outdoor plans should include a quick route indoors rather than relying on the rain to cool things down.
Saturday Offers Only A Brief Break
Friday night stays muggy, with a low around 75°F and a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. Saturday will be a little cooler, topping out near 92°F, but the heat index may still reach 106°F and storms return after 4 p.m.
Sunday climbs back to 95°F, followed by a sunny Monday near 101°F. The outlook also leaves at least a slight chance of afternoon storms Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday, but Monday is currently the standout heat concern.
How To Handle The Heat
Drink plenty of fluids, use air conditioning or a cooler indoor space, stay out of direct sun and check on older relatives, neighbors and anyone especially vulnerable to heat. If outdoor work is unavoidable, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, and call 911 for signs of heat stroke.
