An apparent robbery call in Charlotte’s Central Division led officers to a two-vehicle crash Sunday near E. 5th Street and N. McDowell Street, where four people were hospitalized and one victim later died. CMPD said one victim had an apparent gunshot wound, while another suffered life-threatening injuries and three had non-life-threatening injuries. The circumstances connecting the robbery report, shooting and crash remain under investigation.
According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department release and the department’s post on X, officers first responded to a robbery-from-person call at the intersection. They then discovered a crash involving two vehicles, prompting both homicide and major crash detectives to respond.
Four Victims Were Taken To Local Hospitals
Charlotte Fire, MEDIC, CMPD Operations Command and Victim Services responded to assist, while Crime Scene Search personnel processed the scene and collected physical evidence. Police said one victim was pronounced dead at a hospital after the crash response. The department has not released the victims’ identities.
CMPD Asks For Information As Investigation Continues
The initial release did not name a suspect or announce charges, but CMPD said it is not seeking additional persons of interest. Detective Murphy is the lead detective assigned to the case, which remains active and ongoing, according to the department’s official release.
