
Four-legged robots equipped with cameras have started prowling a fenced-off construction site along the Cleveland riverfront, patrolling in the hours before dawn when human eyes are scarcest. Signs posted around the perimeter warn trespassers that the area is protected by security robotics, and the machines themselves return to their own kennels between rounds.
The site they are guarding is no ordinary lot. As reported by FOX 8 Cleveland WJW, robotic dogs have been in use in the area for about a year, and drone outlet DroneFox previously spotted the robotic K-9s on private security patrol nearby. The construction site sits along the Cleveland riverfront, where the Cleveland Cavaliers are building a new complex with a training facility and more.
That complex is the Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center, a 210,000-square-foot sports medicine and training facility valued at more than $200 million that broke ground in October 2024 and is scheduled to open in 2027, according to Construction Dive. The project marks the first vertical development in Bedrock Real Estate's $3.5 billion, 35-acre Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan, which envisions more than 3.5 million square feet of mixed-use development along the water. That kind of investment helps explain why exposed building materials on the site have drawn round-the-clock robotic attention rather than a lone night watchman.
How the Robotic Patrols Actually Work
Robotic dogs used for this kind of work are outfitted with cameras and, in some deployments elsewhere, sensors capable of detecting hazards. In Las Vegas, for instance, police use robots equipped with cameras and sensors, including robotic technology that helps detect explosives or identify other dangers, though the Cleveland riverfront machines are deployed for private security rather than police work. Robotic dogs of this type operate across the United States, patrolling private security areas before dawn in industries far beyond construction.
Systems like Asylon Robotics' DroneDog rely on self-contained, weatherproof docking stations known as DogHouses that automatically recharge the robot's batteries and shield it from the elements between scheduled patrols, according to Asylon Robotics. That automated charging and housing setup is part of what allows the machines to keep working through the night without an on-site mechanic. The underlying technology got a boost from a $12 million U.S. Air Force contract awarded to Asylon Robotics in late 2023 to scale the DroneDog system for military base perimeter defense, per Unmanned Systems Technology, showing how defense research has trickled down into civilian jobsite security.
Why Developers Are Choosing Robots Over Guards
The financial logic behind the shift is straightforward. Operating an autonomous robotic dog patrol service costs between $120,000 and $170,000 per year per site, compared to roughly $250,000 annually to staff a full-time, 24/7 human guard team, per reporting referencing Business Insider. Construction site theft and vandalism, meanwhile, drain an estimated $400 million to $1 billion from the industry nationally each year, driven largely by stolen heavy equipment, tools, and raw materials left exposed overnight, according to For Construction Pros.
Cleveland's riverfront deployment fits a pattern seen elsewhere in the country. Commercial properties including apartment complexes and major sports venues like Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium have increasingly integrated quadruped security robots to monitor perimeters and deter nighttime trespassing, per Reuters video coverage. Hoodline previously reported that a similar robot was deployed to stalk Castleberry Hill and send trespassers running, and property managers in that market have reported marked drops in unauthorized entries after adopting the technology.
Downtown Cleveland's Broader Robotic Push
The riverfront patrol is not downtown Cleveland's first venture into automated surveillance. The city previously expanded autonomous monitoring in October 2024 by installing AI-powered security camera towers from Robotic Assistance Devices in Public Square and Playhouse Square to watch for loitering and trespassing, according to a report carried by WJW FOX 8 Cleveland. Local business groups reported crime reductions near those camera tower zones.
Public-sector experiments with patrol robots have had a rockier record. The Dublin Police Department retired its autonomous patrol robot, nicknamed DubBot, in June after less than a year of service because it generated no criminal cases or arrests, a contrast to the private-sector deployments that continue to expand on closed construction sites and commercial properties. In Ohio, private security firms running automated or physical guard services are regulated and licensed by the Private Investigator Security Guard Services division of Ohio Homeland Security, a framework that allows automated perimeter patrols on private property when monitored by off-site remote operators.
That distinction matters for how the Cleveland riverfront robots actually function. They are best understood as mobile sensor nodes and deterrents that relay live video feeds to remote human monitors, rather than machines making independent decisions about intruders. For now, the robotic dogs continue their pre-dawn rounds along the Cuyahoga, standing watch over a project that will eventually house both a public sports health venue and the Cavaliers' future practice facility.
