College basketball's season opener is coming back to life in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where a midnight tip-off will kick off a 24-hour marathon of eight games spanning two states. The Field of 68 Media Network plans to stage the event starting at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Nov. 2, with High Point facing Liberty in the first of six games at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center. Two more games will unfold roughly 900 miles away in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, rounding out a 16-team slate built almost entirely around mid-major programs.
The concept revives a format ESPN abandoned nearly a decade ago. As reported by The Athletic, ESPN shelved its round-the-clock college basketball marathon format ahead of the 2017 season. The original version traced back to 2008, when ESPN aired 14 live game telecasts across 23 consecutive hours starting at midnight, opening with UMass at Memphis and closing with Kentucky at North Carolina, according to Liberty University's Scholars Crossing. ESPN spokesperson Josh Krulewitz cited programming challenges in coordinating television windows and venue logistics across the country when the network dropped the tradition, per FanBuzz.
An Independent Network Fills the Void
The Field of 68 launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning primarily with podcasts hosted by former college and NBA players, per the Athletic's reporting. The network was founded in October 2020 by longtime sports reporters Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman after Dauster was laid off by NBC Sports, according to Front Office Sports. Dauster told the Athletic that a December 2022 Furman-Stephen F. Austin broadcast in Greenville, South Carolina, was a turning point for the company, and he said the marathon event brings back smaller and unique aspects of college basketball.
Goodman said the 24-hour marathon had not always been a goal for the company, but the concept has scaled quickly. The showcase grew from three games at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls in 2024 to six games across 15 hours in 2025, before expanding to eight games over a full 24 hours this year, per Kentucky Sports Radio's account of the network's trajectory. Goodman is set to call all six games in Rock Hill himself. The company also secured NCAA waivers through all 16 participating schools to make the odd-hour tip-offs possible, per the Athletic.
Rock Hill and Sioux Falls Split the Marathon
The Field of 68 partnered with tourism authority Visit York County to host the Rock Hill slate, according to The Field of 68's own announcement, and the network plans to close the marathon with a live After Dark studio show broadcast from a set inside the Sanford Pentagon. The 151,000-square-foot Rock Hill Sports & Event Center, which opened in late 2019 within the University Center at Knowledge Park district, features a 1,200-seat championship court and sits on the site of a former 1939 textile bleachery, according to McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture. Hoodline previously reported on a $15 million sports complex expansion aimed at boosting the local economy and recreation offerings in the same district.
The Sanford Pentagon, which cost $19 million and opened in September 2013, features the 3,250-seat, retro-styled Heritage Court that has hosted more than 80 NCAA Division I basketball games, according to Augustana University Athletics. All eight games will stream free on The Field of 68's YouTube channel and X account rather than through traditional cable television, per the Athletic's reporting.
Overnight Slots and Coaching Reunions
The Rock Hill schedule opens at 12:01 a.m. Eastern with High Point facing Liberty, followed at 3 a.m. by Northern Illinois against Grambling — a debut for Matt Majkrzak, Northern Illinois' first-time Division I head coach. Appalachian State meets Merrimack at 6 a.m., and Winthrop takes on Queens at 9 a.m., both in Rock Hill. In Sioux Falls, Murray State faces Tennessee State at 11:30 a.m. Eastern, and UTEP meets Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m.
Back in Rock Hill, UAB plays McNeese State at 5:30 p.m. in a matchup with a personal thread for McNeese head coach Bill Armstrong, who earned his degree from UAB in 2001 and played five seasons for the Blazers before beginning his coaching career there as a graduate assistant under current UAB head coach Andy Kennedy, according to McNeese State University Athletics. Armstrong considers Kennedy a primary career mentor, per the same release. The marathon closes at 8 p.m. with Furman facing Bethune-Cookman, the first meeting between the programs since December 2003, matching the 2026 Southern Conference tournament champion against the 2026 SWAC regular-season champion, according to Furman University Athletics. Furman finished 22-13 last season and reached its second NCAA tournament appearance in four years, per the same source.
A Field Stacked With Tournament Pedigree
The 16 teams involved are not just filler for an overnight slot. Five of the 16 teams reached the NCAA tournament last season, and eleven of the 16 won at least 20 games, according to the Athletic. High Point advanced to the round of 32 in the 2026 NCAA tournament after upsetting fifth-seeded Wisconsin, a run that gives the marathon's opening game an unusually high profile for a midnight tip-off.
Whether an independent, ad-supported streaming outlet can sustain quality production and viewer attention through a full day of basketball, including tip-offs at 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., remains to be seen. The Field of 68's expansion from three games in 2024 to eight this year suggests the network believes there is an audience for mid-major matchups that major broadcasters have historically underserved during the season's opening week.
