A teenager is dead and a 20-year-old is recovering after gunshots rang out late Thursday at Wildwood Springs Apartments off Springdale Road in Rock Hill. Officers responding to reports of several gunshots around 10:45 p.m. found an 18-year-old on the ground near the apartment mailboxes, suffering from gunshot wounds.
The teenager was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center, where he later died, according to WBTV. The 20-year-old who was also shot was taken to a different hospital. Detectives told the outlet that both the 18-year-old and the 20-year-old were involved in an “interaction” that escalated into gunfire, though officials have not said what that interaction entailed. No charges had been announced as of early Friday, and authorities said the investigation was continuing.
Same Street, Second Fatal Shooting in Five Months
Rock Hill Police were initially dispatched to the 1100 block of Springdale Road at 10:41 p.m., according to WSOC-TV. The shooting happened on the same street where 21-year-old Tkai Perry was shot and killed in March near the intersection of Springdale Road and Sturgis Road, as reported by WCNC. That earlier case saw Perry pronounced dead at the scene, marking the second fatal shooting along the Springdale Road corridor in five months.
The teenager killed Thursday is at least the third 18-year-old to die in Rock Hill gun violence this year. In February, 18-year-old Za'Veon Heath was gunned down in a downtown parking deck, and on August 1, 18-year-old Alliyah White was killed in an early morning patio shooting that also injured a teen. Suspects were charged in both of those prior 2026 youth homicides, though no arrests have been announced in Thursday's shooting.
A Year of Gunfire Across Rock Hill
The Wildwood Springs shooting adds to a string of gun violence investigations Rock Hill police have opened in 2026. In May, detectives arrested a 34-year-old man in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Camariya Tidwell near Mount Gallant Road, a case in which surveillance video reportedly caught the gunman stalking the home beforehand. In July, a 36-year-old woman was critically injured in a late-night shooting on Crawford Road, leading to attempted murder charges against a local resident who was held without bond. And in April, a 33-year-old man was found shot to death on the 1400 block of Flint Hill Street, prompting a homicide investigation by the department's Criminal Investigations Division.
Federal Uniform Crime Reporting data compiled for Rock Hill puts the city's overall violent crime rate at roughly 3.6 per 1,000 residents, an estimate that places Rock Hill well above the national average for violent crime, with a resident's annual chance of becoming a victim estimated at 1 in 168, per figures compiled by DoorProfit. Wildwood Springs itself has drawn national attention before: in February 2016, the complex was the site of an internationally publicized animal cruelty case after two teenagers shot a six-week-old puppy 18 times with a BB gun nearby, an incident first reported by Fox News.
Possible Charges and What Comes Next
No charges have been filed in connection with Thursday's shooting, and officials have not said whether additional shooters were involved. If charges are eventually filed, South Carolina law draws a sharp distinction between potential outcomes: a murder conviction carries a minimum sentence of 30 years to life, while voluntary manslaughter carries two to 30 years and involuntary manslaughter tops out at five years, according to the South Carolina Code of Laws.
