Lennard High School Student Stabbed Outside Ruskin 7-Eleven

A Lennard High School student was left in critical condition last evening after being stabbed during a fight on the sidewalk outside a 7-Eleven directly across the street from campus in Ruskin. The confrontation happened around 30 minutes after school let out, and deputies found the teenager with a stab wound to the arm before he was taken to a local hospital.

According to WFLA, the teen was listed in critical condition as of 6:15 p.m. yesterday. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 7-Eleven located across East Shell Point Road from Lennard High School after the stabbing, and the outlet reports that Hillsborough County Public Schools confirmed the other person involved in the altercation is not a student at any district school. Preliminary reports cited by HappeningsZone indicate a bystander helped move the bleeding student to the adjacent gas station before emergency medical responders were contacted.

What Deputies Have Not Said

As of the initial report, the sheriff's office had released no additional information about a possible suspect or what led to the confrontation, and no one had been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The specific weapon used has not been detailed beyond the arm wound deputies found on the teen, and it remains unclear what sparked the fight outside the gas station.

The stabbing occurred just steps from Earl J. Lennard High School, which opened in 2006 to ease overcrowding in South Hillsborough County and now serves more than 2,400 students in grades 9 through 12, according to background compiled on Wikipedia. A Campus With a Recent History of Weapons Concerns

Monday's stabbing follows an on-campus weapons recovery at Lennard High School just months earlier. On March 30, deputies arrested a 17-year-old student there after a backpack search turned up a four-inch kitchen knife, a pocket knife, and a book of Columbine High School shooter diaries, as reported by Tampa Bay Patch. That student told deputies he had brought the knives because of an ongoing dispute with other students.

Local advocacy organization Safe and Sound Hillsborough pointed to a series of firearm and weapon incidents involving South Hillsborough County teenagers in March as evidence of rising youth violence in suburban Tampa Bay communities, and called for expanded intervention programs. The sheriff's office has also handled other violent crime in the unincorporated Ruskin area in recent years, including a fatal stabbing in December 2023 that began as a verbal argument in a residential neighborhood.

If a suspect is identified and arrested, Florida law treats battery involving a deadly weapon or great bodily harm as aggravated battery, a second-degree felony. Under Florida Statute § 784.045, a conviction can carry up to 15 years in prison, 15 years of probation, and a $10,000 fine.

Hillsborough County activated automated school zone speed cameras along East Shell Point Road earlier this month, enforcing a 20 mph limit during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal to address traffic concerns outside Lennard High School. The area has also seen rapid residential growth, with Hillsborough County Public Schools committing more than $72 million toward new middle and high school facilities to keep pace with surging enrollment around Ruskin and Wimauma.
