A 44-year-old man was stabbed in the chest while walking toward a bus stop in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood early Wednesday, suffering wounds that police describe as non-life-threatening. The attack happened just before 2 a.m. in the 6100 block of 4th Avenue South, where an unknown man approached the victim, exchanged words with him, then stabbed him with a pocketknife before fleeing on foot.
According to the Seattle Police Department, 911 dispatchers began receiving reports of the stabbing shortly before 2 a.m., and arriving officers found the victim suffering from the chest wound. Officers gave first aid until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and transported him to Harborview Medical Center. The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s with a thin build, last seen wearing an orange jacket and blue jeans.
Tukwila K9 Team Joins the Search
Officers cordoned off the area and searched with help from the Tukwila Police Department K9 Unit, though the man was gone by the time the search got underway, per the department's account. Seattle police routinely lean on mutual aid from neighboring South King County agencies for tracking fleeing suspects near precinct boundaries, since Tukwila sits directly south of the department's South Precinct.
Homicide and Assault Unit detectives are now leading the investigation and will determine what led to the confrontation, the department said. The stabbing falls within Sector O3 of the Seattle Police Department's South Precinct, which patrols Georgetown, Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, and SODO. The case is logged as incident number 2026-229653, and anyone with information is asked to call the department's violent crimes tip line at (206) 233-5000.
A Block With a History of Knife Violence
Wednesday's stabbing is the latest violent incident on a stretch of 4th Avenue South that has drawn repeated police response in recent years. In March, 42-year-old John Marcel Williams was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder for an October 2022 double fatal stabbing in which two victims were stabbed dozens of times inside a residential unit on the same block, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage.
The same block was also the scene of a SWAT standoff in May, when a man stabbed another man in an apartment courtyard following a dispute and then barricaded himself inside for seven hours before officers took him into custody, according to SPD Blotter.
Citywide Crime Numbers Are Falling, but Not Everywhere
The stabbing comes even as broader crime statistics trend downward. Seattle Police Department data for the first half of 2026 showed overall crime down 1.8% and violent crime down 1.9% compared to the same period in 2025, driven by a 31% drop in homicides, with 11 recorded through June versus 16 a year earlier, according to KING 5.
The department's 2025 year-end review similarly found an 18% overall drop in crime and an 8% reduction in aggravated assault cases, which include knife attacks, compared to 2024, per SPD Blotter's year-end report. Statewide, violent crime fell 13.8% in 2025 compared to 2024, with total violent offenses dropping from 28,900 to 24,913, according to data compiled by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and reported by MyNorthwest.
Still, Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes has acknowledged that citywide reductions don't always show up on a block-by-block basis. In July, Barnes noted that localized violent crime spikes have persisted in specific commercial and neighborhood pockets even as overall numbers fall, prompting the department to reallocate specialty units for more investigative capacity, KING 5 reported.
Late-Night Transit Corridor, Regional Trauma Center
The victim was walking toward a stop along 4th Avenue South, a corridor served overnight by King County Metro's Route 124, which runs overnight Night Owl service between downtown Seattle and Georgetown past 3 a.m., according to Moovit. Harborview Medical Center is the King County-owned, UW Medicine-operated hospital that serves as the only Level 1 trauma center for a four-state region spanning Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, according to UW Medicine.
Detectives have not said whether Wednesday's attacker is connected to the block's earlier stabbings, or whether he and the victim knew each other before the confrontation began. The attack marks at least the third violent knife incident reported on the same block since 2022.
