A bicyclist was airlifted to a nearby trauma center Tuesday after a crash involving one vehicle at the U.S. 27 South and Golfview Road intersection in Sebring. The incident brought multiple emergency crews to the Highlands County scene, where responders quickly established a landing zone for an air ambulance.
In a post accompanied by scene photos, Sebring Fire Department said AC 14, AC 15, Engine 15 and Med 14 responded. Fire crews established the landing zone at Max Long Fields, while TGH Aeromed was requested to transport the patient; Sebring police remained at the crash scene for a traffic investigation.
What Officials Have Confirmed
The department described the incident as a vehicle crash involving one vehicle and a bicyclist. The cyclist needed immediate medical attention and was flown to a nearby trauma center, but officials did not release the person’s identity, condition or information about what led to the collision.
Police remained on scene to conduct the crash investigation. No information was immediately released about possible citations, charges or whether any road restrictions continued after emergency operations ended.
US 27 Has A Troubling Crash Record
The crash occurred along a section of U.S. 27 that has drawn safety scrutiny. A Florida Department of Transportation feasibility study examining 2019 through 2023 data counted 2,782 crashes along U.S. 27 in Highlands County, including 57 fatalities and 145 crashes involving serious injuries.
That analysis also identified 21 bicycle crashes along the corridor, three of them fatal, with bicycle crashes concentrated in the Sebring and Avon Park areas. The broader data does not establish what caused Tuesday’s collision, but it underscores the risks faced by people traveling alongside one of the county’s busiest highways.
