A semi-truck overturned on westbound Interstate 64 in Shelby County Thursday morning, leaving the driver with minor injuries and forcing emergency crews to reroute traffic. The rollover happened near the 38-mile marker, prompting a detour that police said could last at least a couple of hours while cleanup continued.
According to WLKY, police said on social media that the driver suffered only minor injuries in the crash. Officers directed drivers to detour at the Waddy Peytona exit, according to the same WLKY report. As reported by WHAS11, emergency responders diverted westbound traffic off Exit 43 at Waddy onto U.S. 60 as crews worked to clear the wreck.
A Work Zone Already Squeezed for Space
KYTC's $118 million I-64 Widening and Improvement Project is a three-year effort in Shelby County that launched in February 2025 and is set to wrap up in fall 2027, per KYTC. The project covers 11 miles, including a six-mile section that will be widened from four to six lanes, and includes rebuilding several overpass bridges along the way.
KYTC has made lane-configuration changes in the corridor during construction projects.
Exit 43 Has Seen This Before
This is not the first time a commercial truck crash has forced traffic off the interstate at this exact corridor. In December 2014, an eastbound jackknifed tractor-trailer shut down I-64 East near mile marker 44 and Exit 43 for two to three hours, with drivers routed onto the same U.S. 60 detour, according to WDRB. The Waddy-Peytona exit has also drawn attention outside of truck crashes.

This stretch of I-64 has also seen its share of maintenance-driven disruptions in recent years. Back in June 2022, KYTC District 5 temporarily closed middle lanes between Exit 43 and mile marker 38 as part of an $8.9 million asphalt resurfacing and guardrail repair project, according to the State-Journal. As of Thursday, cleanup from the rollover was continuing, and the detour was expected to last at least a couple of hours.
