South Marion High School's football field isn't ready for kickoff, and it won't be for months. Geotechnical engineers discovered seven subsurface voids beneath the athletic facility at the brand-new Marion Oaks campus, forcing the inaugural football season to begin entirely on the road while crews pump grout into the ground to stabilize it.
The discovery means the Bulls will play their first home-designated games away from home until late in the 2026 season, according to FOX 35 Orlando. The team's Kickoff Classic against Lake Buena Vista High School, originally set for South Marion's own field, has been relocated to Dunnellon High School, roughly 21 miles west of the new campus, with the game now set to start at 7 p.m. on August 14. Dunnellon High School agreed to let South Marion use its facility while repairs continue, per the same report.
Engineers first identified the voids in June 2026 using ground-penetrating radar and soil testing, per FOX 35 Orlando's account. Six of the voids sit directly beneath the sports field, while a seventh was located south of the athletic facilities. Ben Whitehouse responded to the findings by noting that the voids could potentially form sinkholes, the station reported.
Grout, Gravel and a Race Against the Calendar
Crews are now stabilizing the ground through injection grouting, a process that extends as much as one foot below the underground drainage system and aims to strengthen the soil and reduce the risk of a future cave-in, according to the same report. Workers have removed sections of artificial turf, base gravel and underground drainage piping, and Wharton-Smith Inc. has begun excavating portions of the football field as part of the effort. Repairs began July 29, and the district says South Marion still requires additional soil borings and geotechnical testing before the work is complete.
The Marion County School Board approved a $671,917 contract amendment to Wharton-Smith's guaranteed maximum price at its July 28 meeting, according to Marion County Public Schools. The amendment allocates capital funds specifically for subsurface void remediation and field restoration, and the repair contract covers excavation, grout installation, turf restoration, contingency costs and contractor fees. Colby Wisdom, who provided information for the FOX 35 Orlando story alongside the Marion County school district, said field repairs are progressing as expected.
District officials are targeting substantial completion by October 29, 2026, with final completion set for January 27, 2027, per FOX 35 Orlando. Until substantial completion, the South Marion High School stadium will remain closed, meaning the Bulls' inaugural season opens and continues almost entirely away from their own turf. During board discussion, Nancy Thrower asked whether the investigation involved potential sinkholes, underscoring the concern hanging over the project even as officials pushed forward with repairs.
A Campus Already Stretched Before Kickoff
South Marion High School sits on a 115-acre parcel at 1350 SW 165th Street in Marion Oaks and carries a $165 million price tag, making it the district's first new high school built since 2003, according to the Ocala Gazette. The 363,000-square-foot campus was designed with 61 classrooms and an initial capacity of 2,011 students, but district projections from April 2026 put opening-day enrollment at 2,088 students, meaning the facility opens already over capacity, per 352today's reporting.
The campus arrives with its own contracting history. Wharton-Smith secured the construction manager contract in July 2024 only after an external legal investigation confirmed procurement rule violations and ethical threats made by a competing bidder and a school board member during the original selection process, the Ocala Gazette has reported. That controversy predates the current void discovery but shaped which firm is now handling the emergency ground repairs.
Drought and Karst Geology Set the Stage
The voids didn't form in a vacuum. Central Florida geologists and environmental scientists warned in June 2026 that a severe regional drought and a Phase III Extreme Water Shortage had reduced hydrostatic pressure in the Floridan aquifer, heightening the risk of subsurface limestone void collapses across Marion County, according to the Ocala Gazette. Marion County's porous karst limestone foundation has long made it vulnerable to this kind of hazard: the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's records show 398 reported subsidence and sinkhole incidents countywide between 1973 and 2018.
Even as the field sits torn up, the district has been building out other athletic infrastructure for South Marion's launch. In May 2026, the school hired Pat Fox, a state championship-winning football coach from Michigan, as its inaugural head coach, following an earlier coaching search that had to restart in April. In June, the school board also approved a $176,407 agreement with University of Florida Health to station certified UF athletic trainers at South Marion and two other district high schools for the 2026–2027 sports season.
The board didn't stop at South Marion's field. At the same July 28 meeting, it approved up to $184,000 for additional site work on a synthetic turf field project at nearby West Port High School, putting South Marion's repair bill into context alongside other district investments in athletic surfaces. For now, South Marion's coaches and athletes are preparing for the August 14 Kickoff Classic knowing their season, and their new stadium's first real test, will start somewhere else entirely.
