Genika Cafe is nearly ready to open in Shaw, promising a coffeehouse by day and tavern by night near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The business still has not announced an opening date, but its latest update suggests the finish line is finally getting close.
In an update published Tuesday, PoPville reported that Genika is working behind the scenes to prepare for its debut and plans to share the opening date soon. The cafe’s location is positioned to serve both Shaw residents and convention-center visitors looking for somewhere to linger after the morning rush.
Genika Plans Coffee In The Morning, Drinks After Dark
Genika’s website lays out a menu and identity built around the full day: specialty beans from coffee-growing regions around the world, with pour-over, French press, espresso and drip coffee among the brewing options. The site also lists sandwiches and light bites for the afternoon, followed by beer, wine and classic cocktails in the evening, according to Genika Cafe.
The tavern component is more than a slogan. Records from the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration show that Genika’s new Class C tavern license was approved on April 22, 2026; the application listed 18 indoor seats, a total occupancy load of 25, and a requested alcohol carryout and delivery endorsement.
A July 3 licensing report from the agency listed Genika Cafe’s tavern license as active, adding another sign that the business is moving from paperwork toward service. The cafe first appeared in local coverage earlier this year as a planned replacement for a long-vacant storefront near 9th and O streets.
For now, the opening date is the only missing ingredient. Once Genika opens, Shaw will have a compact new option for espresso, sandwiches and evening drinks under one roof—which is a fairly ambitious schedule for a single cafe, but apparently the plan.
