A new Sheetz gas station and convenience store is set to open Wednesday at 50980 North Ave., near 23 Mile Road in Macomb Township, bringing 24-hour fuel and made-to-order food to a corner that already hosts two competing gas stations. The grand opening includes giveaways and Sheetz gift card drawings, and it marks the latest addition to a Pennsylvania-based chain that only entered Michigan two years ago.
The Macomb Township store is one of five Sheetz locations now open in Macomb County and among 11 total in Michigan, according to the company website as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Sheetz expects to operate nearly 20 stores in the state by the end of 2026, part of a roughly $500 million investment the company has said will fund 50 to 60 Southeast Michigan locations over five to six years, per prior Free Press reporting. The chain operates in seven states and didn't open its first Michigan store, in Romulus near Detroit Metro Airport, until August 2024, according to WWJ Newsradio 950.
Getting the Macomb Township site cleared for construction took some municipal groundwork. The township's Board of Trustees rezoned the former CVS Pharmacy property from C-3 to C-2 commercial in May 2025 to resolve a nonconforming lot agreement dating back to 2006, according to C & G Newspapers. The Macomb Township Planning Commission then approved the Sheetz location in June 2025.
Planning Meeting Turned Tense Over Traffic and Competition
That approval didn't come quietly. During the June 2025 planning commission meeting, an opposing local gas station operator was escorted out by police, and residents submitted petitions raising concerns about traffic congestion and market saturation at an intersection that already hosted two rival gas stations, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. The new store will match the standard Sheetz format built across Michigan: a 6,100-square-foot convenience store, round-the-clock operations, outdoor cafe seating, and a staff of 30 to 35 workers, according to CSP Daily News.
As part of its standard launch protocol, Sheetz typically donates $2,500 each to Special Olympics Michigan and a local food bank partner such as Forgotten Harvest at store openings, per the same trade outlet. Those donations are usually presented alongside ceremonial ribbon-cuttings.
More Macomb County Growth Already in the Pipeline
Sheetz isn't stopping at Macomb Township. The company plans a third Macomb County-area location in Warren, plus a Roseville site on Gratiot Avenue near Utica Road, according to the Free Press. That Roseville project has drawn its own controversy: the planned site includes the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the former Apple Annie's Kitchen & Bakery restaurant, and Hoodline previously reported on Sheetz's $3M Roseville land grab.
A Macomb County Circuit Court judge dismissed a lawsuit in December 2025 from a Warren pastor who had tried to block Sheetz's acquisition and planned demolition of the Sacred Heart church building, according to C & G Newspapers. The suit had argued that an earlier 2021 purchase agreement remained valid. Ahead of construction, parish leaders reached an agreement with the city in July 2025 to salvage historical artifacts from the church, including stained-glass entry doors, roof tiles, and the bell tower peak, with plans to reuse them at St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish and Sacred Heart Cemetery, the outlet reported.
Warren itself presents a different obstacle: the city council currently has a moratorium on new gas stations and car washes, according to the Free Press, which could complicate Sheetz's plans for a location there. Elsewhere in Macomb County, Sheetz replaced the historic former State Bank of Fraser building with a store at 14 Mile and Utica roads that opened in May 2026, after Fraser's City Council approved a conditional rezoning despite initial rejection from the local planning commission, per C & G Newspapers.
Part of a Wider Southeast Michigan Push
The Macomb Township opening fits into a broader 2026 expansion blitz of 14 new Sheetz stores across Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, and Washtenaw counties, with additional locations planned in Eastpointe, Warren, Novi, Taylor, Belleville, and Ypsilanti, according to WXYZ. Hoodline recently covered a similar grand opening in Novi, where a historic corner met the wrecking ball to make way for another store.
Backing the rapid rollout is a $145 million food-preparation and logistics facility Sheetz built in Findlay, Ohio, expected to open in 2026 and create 750 jobs supplying regional stores with fresh food components, Hoodline previously reported. The infrastructure investment underscores how Sheetz's Macomb County storefronts are just the visible edge of a much larger Midwest supply chain buildout as the chain works to compete against established players like Speedway and Mobil across Metro Detroit.
