A motorcyclist is dead after a high-speed rear-end collision on San Antonio’s South Side, while the driver of the other vehicle was arrested on suspicion of DWI. Police said the suspected intoxication was not believed to have caused the crash.
San Antonio police responded at about 2:34 a.m. Sunday to a major collision in the 14000 block of State Highway 16 South, WOAI reports. Investigators said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of another vehicle.
The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver was taken into custody after officers determined that the person was under the influence.
Texas Motorcycle Crashes Continue To Take A Heavy Toll
The San Antonio crash comes as motorcycle deaths remain a major concern across Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation said nearly 9,000 motorcycle crashes statewide in 2025 killed 557 motorcyclists, accounting for 15% of all crash fatalities.
TxDOT says motorcycles offer riders far less physical protection than passenger vehicles and urges drivers to check mirrors and blind spots, look twice before turning or merging, leave motorcycles a full lane of space and maintain a safe following distance.
Police Separate DWI Arrest From Crash Cause
The DWI arrest does not establish that intoxication caused the fatal collision. In its preliminary account, SAPD identified the motorcycle’s reported speed and the rear-end impact as the key circumstances, while separately citing the other driver’s suspected impairment, according to WOAI.
