Deputies found a man with apparent gunshot wounds on the floor of a shed in the 1700 block of 168th Street East in Spanaway/Parkland Monday afternoon, launching a homicide investigation that has so far produced no named suspect, motive, or public identification of the victim. The call came in just before 4:36 p.m. as a report of a person down, and by the time deputies arrived, they discovered the scene inside the shed rather than in the open.
According to a post from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, detectives and forensic technicians were still working the scene as of Tuesday morning. The office noted its social media account is not staffed around the clock and urged anyone with an active emergency to call 911 rather than reach out online. No further details on the victim's age, identity, or the circumstances leading up to the shooting have been released.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
The shed sits along a stretch of 168th Street East that has seen its share of law enforcement activity in recent years. Just over a year earlier, on July 16, 2025, deputies responded to a commercial burglary in progress a few blocks away in the 1300 block of the same street, where security cameras caught two male suspects breaking into a school building before fleeing ahead of deputies' arrival, per the Pierce County Sheriff's Office Blotter.
The corridor's connection to unsolved violence stretches back further. In May 2017, 31-year-old Jessica Hanson was found critically injured in the roadway near B Street East along the same 168th Street East corridor following a domestic argument, according to KIRO 7 News. Hanson later died of her injuries, and that case remains an active cold case.
Recent Violence in Spanaway
The shed shooting also comes just over a week after a separate violent incident nearby. On August 1, deputies responded to a stabbing in the 16300 block of 9th Avenue East in Spanaway, where a male suspect was arrested on scene for domestic violence assault after a female victim suffered multiple stab wounds and survived, the sheriff's office blotter states.
Because Spanaway and Parkland are unincorporated census-designated areas, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office Central Patrol Division serves as the sole primary law enforcement agency for the community, rather than a dedicated city police department. That means every violent crime response, homicide probe, and cold case in the area falls to county deputies and detectives rather than local municipal officers.
Countywide Numbers and Political Backdrop
Unincorporated Pierce County recorded 49 homicides in 2025, a modest decline from 55 in 2024, according to prior Hoodline reporting. Even with that dip, recent violence in Spanaway underscores that public safety concerns in the area remain far from resolved.
The investigation also unfolds against a backdrop of political uncertainty at the top of the agency. Sheriff Keith Swank took office in January 2025 after 33 years with the Seattle Police Department, having won election the previous November. Pierce County voters will now decide on Amendment C1 in the November 2026 general election, a charter measure that would eliminate the elected sheriff position in favor of an appointed role, a change that could remove Swank from office as soon as January 1, 2027, as reported by KOMO News.

No arrest or suspect has been announced in the shed shooting, so it remains unclear what charges, if any, prosecutors might eventually pursue. Under Washington's RCW 9A.32.030, first-degree murder is a Class A felony carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and requires proof of premeditated intent formed over more than a fleeting moment, or conduct showing extreme indifference to human life. A separate statute, RCW 9A.32.050, allows for second-degree murder charges when a death is caused intentionally without premeditation or during the commission of another felony, also punishable by up to life in prison.
