The Spartanburg County coroner’s office knows who skeletal remains found Monday near Highway 11 and I-26 belong to, but the name is staying secret for now. The coroner is waiting for the decedent’s husband — the listed next of kin — to be notified before releasing the identity.
According to FOX Carolina, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is helping locate the husband, who lives out of state. The coroner’s office said it still needs contact information for that address and will release the identity after notification is complete.
Why The Identity Is Being Withheld
This is part of the coroner’s family-notification process, which keeps the public announcement separate from the forensic identification. Spartanburg County’s official FAQ says the coroner must make positive identification and determine the cause and manner of unexpected, violent or unusual deaths, while investigators decide case by case whether a relative must make an in-person identification, according to Spartanburg County government guidance.
The initial FOX Carolina report did not include the decedent’s name, the circumstances surrounding the discovery or any indication of the cause and manner of death. It also did not provide a timeline for when the husband might be reached, beyond the coroner’s statement that the identity will be released after he is notified.
For now, the case sits in an uncomfortable in-between: the forensic identification is complete, but the public announcement is not. Officials have said the next step is notifying the husband before attaching a name to the remains in public as well as in the coroner’s records.
