Dogs and their owners will take over a stretch of Rhode River shoreline in Edgewater on August 23, as the SPCA of Anne Arundel County's Puppy Plunge returns to YMCA Camp Letts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission runs $15 per vehicle, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit shelter's care for homeless animals. The day pairs swimming, contests and live entertainment with a fundraising mission that makes it one of the SPCA's largest annual events.
According to Eye On Annapolis, the Puppy Plunge typically draws roughly 1,300 people and their canine companions in a given year. The outlet reports the day is split into separate swimming zones, including Muscle Beach for larger dogs and Petite Beach for smaller ones, so pups of every size can cool off safely.
Muscle Beach, Pup Pie Contests and Family Fun
Beyond the swim zones, the outlet notes the event includes a beachwear photo contest inviting owners to dress their dogs in seaside attire, plus a Pup Pie Eating Contest limited to 15 dogs. Registration for the pie contest costs $5 per dog and is available at the merchandise tent, with the contest sponsored by Puppylicious Gourmet, per the same report.
Food trucks, drinks, tropical cocktails, coffee, lemonade, and sweet treats for both people and dogs round out the concessions, alongside live music, face painting, vendors, giveaways, merchandise and photo opportunities. The event welcomes families, animal lovers and visitors without dogs of their own, not just pet owners looking to let their animals swim.
A Private Nonprofit With a High Lifesaving Rate
The Puppy Plunge benefits the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, a private nonprofit distinct from Anne Arundel County Animal Care and Control, the county government's own shelter in Millersville, according to Rise Above Animal Rescue. Money raised at the event goes toward food, shelter, medical care, enrichment and second chances for animals awaiting permanent homes, per Eye On Annapolis's report.
The SPCA of Anne Arundel County has maintained a 98% lifesaving rate since 2014 and has served the community for 106 years, according to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. The shelter has also earned Charity Navigator's top four-star rating for six consecutive years, placing it in the top 13% of charities nationwide for financial efficiency and transparency. Its headquarters sits at 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis.
A Century-Old Camp Along the Rhode River
YMCA Camp Letts, the Puppy Plunge's host site, spans 220 acres along the Rhode River in Edgewater and traces its origins to 1920, when it was established following a land purchase funded by donor John Letts, according to Wikipedia. The camp has hosted the SPCA's fundraiser for years; back in August 2015, the 4th annual Puppy Plunge drew 1,500 human participants and 61 vendors, raising $45,000 for homeless animal care, according to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
The event hasn't always gone off as planned. In July 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shelter was forced to swap its traditional in-person gathering for a virtual fundraising challenge called the #TakeThePlungeChallenge, according to CBS News.
Camp Letts has also drawn attention for reasons unrelated to the SPCA's fundraiser. In August 2024, an 8-year-old girl suffered serious injuries in a serious zipline injury in 2024 after a 12-foot fall from an outside vendor's zipline during a separate private event at the camp, Hoodline previously reported.
Rabies Shots and County Licenses Required for Pups
Dog owners planning to bring pets should be aware of Maryland and county requirements before heading to Camp Letts. State law requires all dogs four months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies, and Anne Arundel County regulations require dogs six months or older to carry an official county license, according to Anne Arundel County Government.
The SPCA also offers a low-cost rabies and wellness vaccine clinic on the third Saturday of every month for owners looking to get their pets up to date, per Rise Above Animal Rescue. Community support for the shelter extends beyond the Puppy Plunge as well; the Annapolis Pickleball Club raised $3,500 for the organization during its September 2025 Bay Capital Mortgage Open.
