Someone in northeast Charlotte allegedly cut a Spectrum fiber line yesterday, and the resulting outage has now triggered a $25,000 search for answers. Residents and businesses briefly lost service near Washington Boulevard, turning a communications disruption into a costly criminal investigation.
The line was cut near Washington Boulevard in northeast Charlotte, temporarily leaving some residents and businesses without service, according to WSOC-TV. Spectrum described the incident as a criminal attack, but no suspect was identified in the report.
The reward is worth up to $25,000, meaning the full amount is not necessarily guaranteed. Under Spectrum's reward terms, credible information must lead directly to an arrest and conviction, and tips must be submitted to both Spectrum at 833-404-TIPS (8477) and the appropriate law-enforcement agency.
Why A Fiber Cut Becomes A Public-Safety Problem
Spectrum has said attacks on communications infrastructure can do more than interrupt home internet or television service because damaged lines may affect connectivity used by emergency services. That concern also surfaced after a separate May fiber cut in west Charlotte, when a temporary outage hit customers along West Tyvola Road, as Hoodline previously reported.
The May case was not isolated in the broader region. In July, a similar deliberate fiber cut in Anderson County, South Carolina, prompted another Spectrum reward of up to $25,000 after service was disrupted, according to WYFF 4.
Police Are Asking For Information
For the Charlotte case, police are asking anyone with information to come forward, WSOC-TV reported. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity near Washington Boulevard or knows who may be responsible should contact investigators rather than attempting to intervene.
