St. Johns County drivers may get a rare back-to-school break Friday, with all westbound lanes on County Road 210 expected to reopen before students return. The wider roadwork push is still rolling across the county, so the smoother commute comes with a few remaining traffic asterisks.
According to News4JAX, a county spokesperson said crews had made enough progress on the westbound side for all lanes to reopen by the end of Friday. The St. Johns County school year begins the following week, putting the timing squarely in the category of welcome news for parents and school-bus drivers.
The reopening covers part of the County Road 210 widening corridor between Greenbriar Road and Cimarrone Boulevard. The county's project page says the roughly 2.3-mile project is converting a two-lane urban divided roadway into four lanes, with a median, bike lanes and intersection improvements at Greenbriar Road.
CR 210 relief arrives as other roadwork keeps moving
Drivers have already been navigating staged traffic shifts along the corridor, including a previous setup near CR 210 and Greenbriar Road detailed in an earlier CR 210 shuffle. Friday's expected reopening should remove one major headache, even as nearby projects continue to rearrange the driving map.
The timing matters because the St. Johns County School District calendar lists students returning to class the following week. News4JAX also reported that the county is overseeing 44 active road projects supported by a combined annual budget of $183.1 million.
One reopening, two weekends of detours
As CR 210 gets a partial win, County Road 16A is scheduled to close between Timberwolf Trail and River Reach Parkway from Friday night through Monday morning, then again the following weekend. The St. Johns County government says the closures will allow crews to install pipe for the First Coast Expressway.
During those closures, traffic will detour via State Road 16 and State Road 13. Drivers can check FL511 and county roadwork updates before heading out, because the back-to-school commute is already complicated enough without discovering a surprise detour at the last minute.
More lane shifts are still ahead
Meanwhile, the State Road 16 widening project near International Golf Parkway and St. Johns Parkway is 60% complete, according to county officials cited by News4JAX. Drainage work near International Golf Parkway is expected to wrap up next week, while a temporary signal system is being prepared for an eastbound traffic shift after Labor Day.
