Stouthaus Coffee Roasters is set to open its second brick-and-mortar coffee shop this October at 3008 Davis Lane, Ste. 230, in South Austin, bringing its lattes, cortados, cold brew and hot chocolate to a new stretch of the neighborhood. The shop will serve a full menu that also includes drip coffee, cappuccinos, americanos, iced tea, hot tea, kombucha and oatmeal with fruit and nut mix-ins.
According to Community Impact, the Davis Lane location marks the company's second permanent storefront, joining its original brick-and-mortar shop at 4715 S. Lamar Blvd., Ste. 102. That original shop opened on September 15, 2014, founded by husband and wife James and Sandy Hughes, according to WhatNow Austin, which reports the couple built the business to serve as a neighborhood gathering spot blending specialty coffee with craft beer.
From Third-Party Beans to In-House Roasting
Stouthaus spent years building its identity before committing to a second physical shop. In fall 2020, the company expanded into in-house coffee roasting and debuted its signature espresso blend, The Resistance, per the same WhatNow Austin account. The business roasts its beans locally in Austin and ships orders nationwide, according to that report.
The company tested the waters of expansion before Davis Lane. Stouthaus launched a mobile coffee trailer at Thicket Food Park, located off South 1st Street, on September 7, 2023, marking its first location expansion prior to the new Davis Lane store, per WhatNow Austin's account, which notes the trailer serves espresso, cold brew, matcha, chai tea and pastries from Texas French Bread.
A Coffee Pub Rooted in South Austin
The flagship South Lamar Boulevard shop built its following as a hybrid coffee shop and neighborhood craft beer hall, running 18 draft taps for Texas craft beer and wine alongside its locally roasted coffee, the WhatNow Austin report states. The owners reportedly chose the name Stouthaus to reflect traditional European public houses. That dual identity helped the original shop earn a spot on Hoodline's roundup of Austin's top beer and wine destinations back in 2020.
The Davis Lane café's interior design is being led by Austin designer Shane Bruegger, whose portfolio includes local dining spots such as Ramen Del Barrio, Via 313 Pizza and Craft Omakase, according to WhatNow Austin's reporting.
New Neighbors on Davis Lane
The shopping center at 3008 Davis Lane also houses Lala's South Pole, a 2,100-square-foot, year-round Christmas-themed bar that opened in August 2024 as an expansion of the historic Lala's Little Nugget, according to Tribeza. The plaza serves South Austin residential neighborhoods including Cherry Creek and Shady Hollow, per that outlet's coverage.
Notably, while the original S. Lamar Blvd. shop is commonly described as South Austin, it actually sits within the municipal boundary of Sunset Valley, Texas, an independent enclave surrounded by the city of Austin with its own city government, property tax rates and commercial zoning, WhatNow Austin reports. The new Davis Lane location, by contrast, will sit within Austin proper.
Stouthaus also weathered an early public-relations moment in March 2015, when a staff member asked a nursing mother to cover up. The owners issued an apology, hosted a community nurse-in, and donated 10% of proceeds to the Mothers' Milk Bank of Austin, an episode that was locally praised as a swift and constructive response at the time, per historical Reddit discussion cited in the dossier's background.
With the Davis Lane storefront on track for an October opening, Stouthaus is poised to extend a coffee-and-beer-hall model it has spent more than a decade refining, from its Sunset Valley roots to a food-park trailer and now a second full café serving deep South Austin's residential corridors.
