Chicago is starting Sunday with mostly clear skies and temperatures near 63 degrees, setting up a sunny afternoon that should reach about 74. The catch is along Lake Michigan, where dangerous currents and 3- to 5-foot waves are making the beach a bad place for a swim.
Beach Hazards Continue Through Sunday Evening
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect through 10 p.m. Sunday for beaches in northern and central Cook County. The National Weather Service Chicago warns that swimming conditions could be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers.
Officials are urging people to stay out of the water and avoid piers, jetties, breakwalls and other shoreline structures. Anyone heading toward the lakefront should check the Chicago Park District beach dashboard for current swim advisories before making plans.
Sunny, Breezy Conditions Away From The Lake
Inland neighborhoods should get a comfortable summer day, with north-northwest winds around 10 mph and gusts reaching 20 mph. Temperatures will rise from the mid-60s early Sunday into the mid-70s during the afternoon, with no meaningful rain chance expected.
Sunday night will turn mostly clear and cooler, with lows near 61 and northwest winds easing to 5 to 10 mph. Monday looks much the same, with sunshine and a high near 74 before warmer air returns Tuesday.
Warmth Builds Before Midweek Storm Chances
Tuesday should be mostly sunny and warmer, with a high near 80 and only a slight rain chance. The next notable change arrives Wednesday, when temperatures reach about 82 and showers or thunderstorms could develop after 1 p.m.
The Wednesday storm chance continues into the evening, though the forecast does not call for a washout at this point. Thursday and Friday trend drier and seasonable, while Saturday brings another slight chance of afternoon showers.
