SUV Driver Vanishes After Critically Injuring Woman on Colonial Drive Shoulder

A 25-year-old woman was left in critical condition Sunday morning after a vehicle struck her while she stood on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of Colonial Drive in Orange County, then sped away without stopping. The crash happened just after 6:15 a.m., while the woman was standing outside her own vehicle on the roadside. She was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are now asking the public for help tracking down the driver responsible, according to FOX 35 Orlando. A witness described the fleeing vehicle as what looked to be an SUV, but no further identifying details, such as color, make, or model, have been released. The vehicle left the scene before troopers arrived, and its driver has not been identified.

A Felony Charge Looms If the Driver Is Found

Leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury is a second-degree felony under Florida law, carrying up to 15 years in prison, up to 15 years of probation, and a $10,000 fine, per the Florida Statutes. If the victim's condition worsens and she does not survive, the potential charge escalates dramatically. Under Florida's Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act, fleeing the scene of a fatal crash becomes a first-degree felony carrying a mandatory minimum of four years in prison and up to 30 years, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. That law was passed in 2014 after a cyclist was killed by an impaired driver who fled the scene.

Florida's Move Over law also applies to situations like this one. Since January 2024, the statute has required drivers to vacate the lane closest to a disabled vehicle on the shoulder, or slow down by 20 mph, whenever hazard lights, warning signs, or a visible person are present, per the state's Move Over guidance. That expanded protection, which once applied mainly to emergency, utility, and sanitation vehicles, now covers ordinary motorists like the woman who was standing beside her car when she was hit.

Colonial Drive's Troubled Safety Record

The stretch of roadway where the crash occurred is no stranger to danger. Colonial Drive, also known as State Road 50, is one of Central Florida's busiest east-west corridors, carrying more than 45,000 vehicles a day on its eastern Orange County segments, according to the Central Florida Expressway Authority. County commissioners voted in October 2025 to partner with the Florida Department of Transportation to speed up safety improvements after MetroPlan Orlando data showed 14 deadly crashes along a specific stretch of East Colonial Drive between 2020 and 2024, as reported by Spectrum News 13.

Hit-and-runs of this kind are far from rare across the state.
