Travis Ray Nations is headed to prison for at least 18 years after pleading guilty to two counts of statutory rape of a child under 15 in Swain County. The sentence came after two survivors addressed the court, bringing a case involving offenses from 2017 and 2020 to its latest chapter.
According to WYFF 4, Nations was sentenced on July 27 to 18 years to 26 years and eight months in prison. The offenses occurred on February 1, 2017, and August 1, 2020, and Nations was arrested on May 6, 2022. He also received credit for 1,541 days already spent in confinement.
Two survivors delivered victim-impact statements during the sentencing. One submitted a handwritten statement, while the other spoke in person. Their statements gave the court a direct account of the harm behind the charges.
What The Charges Mean Under North Carolina Law
North Carolina statutes distinguish among statutory rape offenses based on the victim's age and the age gap between the defendant and victim. Under the state provision covering intercourse with a person 15 or younger, the offense is a Class B1 felony when the defendant is at least six years older, while certain narrower age-gap cases are classified as Class C felonies, according to the North Carolina General Assembly.
Nations must register as a sex offender for 30 years after his release, WYFF 4 reported. That requirement will follow his prison sentence and extend the case's legal consequences well beyond his time behind bars.
