Greenville has its first taste of dirty soda. Swig, the Utah-born drive-thru chain known for customizable sodas loaded with fruit purees and creams, quietly began a soft opening on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 1534 Woodruff Road. According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation's 2024 Average Daily Traffic printout, Route 146 (Woodruff Road) carried 8,400 vehicles at the listed count location in Greenville County.
The soft-opening phase is focused on staff training and working out operational kinks before the store settles into regular business, according to Greenville Online. General manager Katherine Adams told the outlet that early traffic has already been strong. “It's been going really good…it's been pretty busy,” Adams said.
Regular hours are set to kick in Thursday, Aug. 13, per Adams, with the shop open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. During the current soft-opening stretch, hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A grand opening celebration is expected the weekend of Aug. 28, Adams said.
From a St. George Startup to a National Chain
Swig traces back to 2010, when Nicole Robison opened the original location in St. George, Utah, building a menu around what the company calls dirty soda — soft drinks blended with flavor syrups, fresh fruit, purees, and creams. The chain has since grown to more than 100 locations, with the Greenville shop marking its first foray into the Upstate after two earlier South Carolina stores opened in York County.
Swig opened a store in Indian Land, followed by plans for a second Rock Hill-area location at Sharonwood Shopping Center, according to WRHI. The same outlet reported that dirty soda culture got a major pop-culture boost after being featured on the Hulu reality series *The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives*, which premiered in late 2024 and showcased the cast's custom soda orders.
What's on the Menu
Swig's signature drink, the Shark Attack — a mix of Sprite, lemonade, blue raspberry and a gummy shark topping — is the chain's top seller, per Greenville Online. Other menu items include the Texas Tab, made with Dr Pepper, vanilla and coconut cream, and the Strawberry Breeze, which blends water, sugar-free coconut, sugar-free vanilla, strawberry puree, frozen strawberry and coconut cream.
Beyond its customizable sodas, Swig also sells water-based Refreshers and energy-infused Revivers, according to the Johnson County Post, along with warm hot chocolate and baked goods like sugar cookies and salted pretzel bites.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 63% of U.S. adults aged 18 or older reported drinking sugar-sweetened beverages one or more times daily.
Riding a National Growth Wave
The Greenville opening lands amid a broader surge for the brand. Foot-traffic visits to Swig stores jumped 137.9% in February compared with the same month in 2023, with year-over-year visits up 30.7% from February 2025, according to location analytics firm Placer.ai as reported by the National Association of Convenience Stores. Salt Lake City-based The Larry H. Miller Company acquired a majority stake in Swig back in November 2022 from private equity group Savory Fund, which retained a minority investment alongside founder Nicole Tanner.
Within six months of launching multi-unit franchising in February 2023, Swig had signed agreements for 250 franchise units across seven states, working toward a stated goal of 500 committed units, per PR Newswire. As of mid-2026, the chain operates more than 150 locations across 16 states, favoring compact drive-thru formats as small as 800 to 850 square feet, according to KRDO.
The dirty soda boom has not gone unnoticed by bigger players. McDonald's offers specialty and dirty-soda drinks. Notably, the Greenville store now occupies a building once used by Sonic itself — a fitting twist as the dirty soda upstart continues expanding.
