A late-night wrong-way collision on the Courtney Campbell Causeway left one driver dead Sunday after a Nissan crossed the median near Ben T. Davis Beach and slammed head-on into a Ford Explorer. The Ford driver survived with minor injuries, but the Nissan driver died at a hospital.
The crash happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. yesterday, according to WFLA's report, which cited the Tampa Police Department. The Nissan entered oncoming traffic before colliding with the Ford, while the cause of the median crossing remained unclear in the initial account.

The Ford driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to police information reported by WFLA. The Nissan driver was also hospitalized but later died, and authorities had not publicly released the person's identity in the initial report.
The crash occurred on a stretch of roadway that Tampa police have previously targeted for dangerous-driving enforcement. During a separate Labor Day weekend operation in 2024, the Tampa Police Department said officers made 207 traffic stops on the Courtney Campbell Causeway and issued 106 speeding citations.
That earlier enforcement effort does not establish what caused Sunday's collision, and police have not said that speeding or racing played a role. The fatal crash remains a developing investigation, with additional details about the circumstances and the driver expected to come from authorities.
