Austin's beloved Lions Municipal Golf Course is getting a country-music fundraiser with a very large mission: keeping its historic 141 acres in public hands.
Tanya Tucker will headline the fifth annual Imagine Muny V on Thursday, September 10, at ACL Live, joined by Wade Bowen, Jack Ingram, Asleep at the Wheel and The Copa Kings, according to CultureMap Austin. The lineup gives the preservation campaign a suitably Texas soundtrack, with Tucker bringing her Country Music Hall of Fame credentials to the top of the bill.
Austin Country Stars Will Rally Around Muny’s Future
The event is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m., at ACL Live at The Moody Theater. The venue’s ticketing page describes Imagine Muny as an all-ages annual benefit for the Muny Conservancy, with condensed artist sets and a strict eight-ticket purchase limit, according to AXS.
The Muny Conservancy says Lions Municipal Golf Course has leased its land from the University of Texas for nearly a century, and that the group was created in 2019 to work with the city and UT toward permanent preservation. Its proposed future includes a restored historic clubhouse, a teaching and history center focused on the course’s 1950 integration, public trails, event space, a restaurant, a farmers market area and expanded golf instruction, according to the Muny Conservancy.
The 141-Acre Fight Goes Beyond Golf
The conservancy also says Muny hosts about 60,000 rounds of golf each year, serves as a practice facility for more than a dozen middle and high school teams, and contains protected heritage trees. That mix of recreation, green space and civil rights history is why the course’s future has drawn attention well beyond Austin’s golf crowd.
Earlier Hoodline coverage highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the property as UT weighs its long-term use, while community and civil rights leaders have pushed for the course to remain a public asset. Imagine Muny V is the latest high-profile effort to turn that preservation argument into financial support.
