A 33-year-old Taylors man has died after his motorcycle collided with a car at a busy Greer intersection, according to the Greenville County Coroner's Office. James Kelsey Combs was pronounced dead at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital at 9:17 p.m. Sunday, hours after officials were called to the crash on West Wade Hampton Boulevard.
Officials were called to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, reporting a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a car at the intersection of West Wade Hampton Boulevard and Hillcrest Drive in Greer, according to FOX Carolina News. Combs was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The Greenville County Coroner's Office and Greer City Police Department are investigating the crash.
The coroner's office ruled Combs' manner of death an accident, with blunt force injuries listed as the cause, per the coroner. An external examination is scheduled to be performed Monday, the outlet reported. It remains unclear whether right-of-way violations or signal timing played a role in the crash, and no charges have been announced.
A Dangerous Stretch of Roadway
West Wade Hampton Boulevard, part of U.S. 29, is one of the Upstate's busiest arterial corridors, linking Greenville, Taylors, and Greer. The Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study identified Wade Hampton Boulevard as one of six regional corridors that together account for 36% of all intersection crashes in the area. That history prompted the South Carolina Department of Transportation to launch a safety improvement project earlier this year upgrading a dozen major intersections along the boulevard in Greenville County with enhanced signalization and crosswalk treatments, according to the agency's Facebook page.
The corridor has seen fatal crashes before. In May, a pickup truck struck a semi-truck trailer at the intersection of East Wade Hampton Boulevard and Arlington Road in Greer, killing a 43-year-old Wellford resident, per Pracht Injury Lawyers. Greenville County as a whole consistently ranks first in South Carolina for total traffic accidents, logging 16,640 collisions and 71 fatal crashes in annual state crash summaries, according to Jebaily Law Firm.
A Broader Pattern of Motorcycle Fatalities
Combs' death adds to a string of recent fatal motorcycle crashes across the Upstate. Hoodline previously reported on a rider killed when a Jeep turned left onto Stewart Road in Greenville County, and separately covered a Gray Court man killed after his motorcycle veered off US 178 near Honea Path. Federal and state traffic safety analysis indicates that more than 75% of multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes involve head-on or angle collisions, most often caused when a passenger vehicle fails to yield the right-of-way.
South Carolina had recorded 74 motorcyclist fatalities through August 7, down from 93 during the same period in 2025, according to state Department of Public Safety data. Under South Carolina Code Section 56-5-2320, drivers turning left within an intersection must yield to oncoming traffic close enough to pose an immediate hazard, a statute frequently cited in intersection crashes involving motorcycles statewide. It is not yet known whether that provision, or any other right-of-way rule, factored into Sunday's crash.
South Carolina does not require riders 21 and older to wear a helmet, after the state repealed its universal helmet mandate for adult riders in 1980. Whether Combs was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash has not been disclosed. National research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that an approved helmet reduces a motorcycle operator's risk of fatality in a crash by roughly 37 percent.
