A Charlotte crash that killed a 19-year-old passenger last fall has turned into a second-degree murder case after police arrested the teen they say was behind the wheel and fled the wreck. The arrest came months after the deadly collision on Remount Road, adding a major development to a case that had remained under investigation since November.
The crash happened on Nov. 4, 2025, when a stolen 2014 Kia Rio ran off the road and struck a utility pole at about 4:15 a.m., according to the Charlotte Observer. Police identified the deceased passenger as Evelin Suseli Mejia Alvarez, while a male teen passenger was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Investigators say the driver ran away without calling 911 or rendering aid.
In its initial release, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the wreck occurred in the 1200 block of Remount Road and that speed and reckless driving appeared to be contributing factors. Officers found both passengers unresponsive inside the Kia, while the driver and possibly another passenger had fled on foot, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Teen Faces Four Charges In Fatal Wreck
Police obtained a secure custody order Wednesday charging the teen driver with second-degree murder, felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and driving without an operator's license, the Charlotte Observer reported. The charges are allegations, and the case must still proceed through the juvenile court system.
