A 46-year-old former Thornville resident will spend the next four decades in federal prison after a judge in Columbus sentenced him for sexually exploiting four minor girls, abuse that federal prosecutors say began when the youngest victim was just seven years old. Shannon “Michael” McTighe pleaded guilty in February to sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography, and Chief U.S. District Judge Sarah D. Morrison formally handed down the 480-month sentence on August 4.
According to CW Columbus, investigators found roughly 300,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse material on McTighe's electronic devices, and he appeared in some of the material himself abusing the victims. FBI agents arrested McTighe in Canton in June 2025, and court filings connected to the case were unsealed the following month, per PacerMonitor records of the proceedings.
Federal prosecutors say McTighe did not seek out strangers online. Instead, according to court documents reported by WCMH-TV, he already had personal access to all four minor victims in central Ohio, a detail that underscores how often this kind of abuse comes from someone a child already knows rather than an anonymous predator. The station's report also notes that the hands-on abuse stretched back to 2019, when the youngest of the four girls was seven.
Safe Held Underwear, Phone Searches for “Extremely Young”
A search warrant executed at McTighe's residence turned up numerous digital media devices and three pairs of female juvenile underwear locked inside a safe, according to the U.S. Department of Justice's announcement of the sentence. Investigators also recovered cellphone records showing searches for terms including “underage,” “jailbait girls,” and “extremely young,” the Justice Department said.
U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II, who leads the Southern District of Ohio's federal prosecutors, said McTighe “committed horrific hands-on offenses against four young girls and amassed hundreds of thousands of videos and images of child sexual abuse.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Czerniejewski led the prosecution, and the sentence was jointly announced by Gerace and FBI Cincinnati Division Special Agent in Charge Jason Cromartie.
Case Brought Under Nationwide Child Exploitation Initiative
The prosecution fell under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice program created in 2006 to combine federal, state, and local resources against child sexual exploitation. Under federal law, creating explicit depictions of a minor carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years per count for a first offense, a framework that allowed the multiple counts against McTighe to add up to a 40-year cumulative sentence.
Because federal parole was abolished under the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984, McTighe cannot be paroled early and must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, meaning he will remain in federal custody for a minimum of roughly 34 years. McTighe is a former resident of Thornville, a rural village in Perry County that sits within the 48-county federal jurisdiction served by the U.S. District Court in Columbus, according to WOUB.
