Three Shot on Soundview Commercial Strip, Rushed to Jacobi in Critical Hours

Three people were shot on a Bronx street Thursday afternoon and rushed to the hospital, according to officials. The shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. at 552 Commonwealth Avenue, between Lacombe and Randall avenues, in the Soundview section of the borough.

Fire officials received a report of a male shot at that address, and EMS crews arriving on scene found three civilians who had been shot, according to WABC-TV. All three were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, though their conditions remained unclear as of Thursday evening. The NYPD is investigating the shooting, and no details on a motive or suspects have been released.

A Commercial Strip Turned Crime Scene

The address sits on a stretch of Commonwealth Avenue that mixes small commercial services with residential apartment buildings, including storefronts like Luxury Style Barber Shop, per business listings on Booksy. The block falls within Bronx Community District 9 and is patrolled by the NYPD's 43rd Precinct, headquartered at 900 Fteley Avenue, which also covers Clason Point, Castle Hill, and Parkchester, according to Bronx Community Board 9. It is not the first time gunfire has erupted on this corridor — News 12 Bronx reported on a daytime altercation on Commonwealth Avenue in July 2025 that escalated into a close-range shooting.

Jacobi Medical Center, where all three victims were taken, operates as the North Bronx's primary Level 1 Trauma Center, handling the region's most severe gunshot and trauma cases. Beyond emergency care, the hospital also runs Stand Up to Violence, a Cure Violence-model program that sends credible messengers into the community as violence interrupters to mediate conflicts and head off retaliation following shootings in the 43rd Precinct, according to the Bronx Times. Research cited by Norwood News found the program associated with a 59 percent drop in the likelihood of violent re-injury among participating trauma patients and a similar reduction in gunshot victims within its target precincts.

Part of a Recent Pattern in Soundview

Thursday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence incidents the 43rd Precinct has responded to in Soundview this year. In May, a 14-year-old boy was shot near Rosedale Avenue, and Hoodline previously reported that four masked gunmen stormed a Soundview home just three days earlier, injuring a man and ransacking the property. Community members have repeatedly called for enhanced lighting and street patrols along local corridors.

Citywide, the picture looks markedly different. NYPD CompStat figures show New York City recorded 418 shooting incidents from January 1 through August 16, 2026, a 7.9 percent decrease from the 454 shootings logged over the same period in 2025. Homicides fell even more sharply, dropping 24.8 percent to 161 through mid-August, down from 214 during the same stretch last year. Even so, localized clusters of violence like Thursday's shooting continue to surface within specific pockets of the 43rd Precinct.

Legal Stakes If Suspects Are Identified

Should investigators identify and apprehend a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm, New York Penal Law § 265.03 classifies illegal possession of a loaded handgun outside a home or place of business as Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony carrying mandatory state prison time under state law. No arrests had been announced as of Thursday evening, and it remains unclear whether the three victims were targeted or caught in the crossfire of a broader dispute. The NYPD has not released further details as the investigation continues.
