Houston’s summer of big-time soccer is getting an encore, this time with an English Premier League club bringing its own season opener to EaDo. Everton will host an official watch party at Pitch 25 on Saturday, Aug. 22, when the Toffees face Crystal Palace in the first match of their new campaign. The 9 a.m. kickoff is early, but the guest list could make it worth setting an alarm.
The event is part of the Premier League’s Coast to Coast Kick Off, a nationwide opening-weekend push running from Aug. 21 through Aug. 24. According to the Premier League, all 20 clubs are staging fan events across 15 U.S. cities, with Houston serving as Everton’s host city while Tottenham Hotspur heads to Austin and Chelsea lands in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Everton’s Houston Tie Is More Than A Marketing Stop
Everton’s choice of Houston has a particularly direct local connection: The club is owned by The Friedkin Group, whose corporate base is in Houston. The group’s sports holdings include Everton and Italian club AS Roma, while the Associated Press reported that Dan Friedkin’s Texas-based organization completed its purchase of the English club.
That makes this more than a random promotional stop on a map of American soccer markets. Houston is effectively getting a home-market gathering for a Premier League club whose ownership operation is rooted in the city, even if the team itself still plays nearly 5,000 miles away in Liverpool.
What Fans Can Expect At Pitch 25
Doors are scheduled to open at 8 a.m., an hour before kickoff, with giveaways and a yet-to-be-announced Everton legend expected to join the event. The Houston Chronicle reported that Everton president of business operations Andrew Middleton described the gathering as a way to bring supporters together for the start of the new season.
Pitch 25 is a natural fit for the event: The EaDo venue bills itself as Houston’s premier soccer bar and regularly opens early for English Premier League matches, according to Pitch 25. Fans should also note that the venue’s website says it is strictly 21 and over, so this is a bar-based supporter event rather than an all-ages festival.
Houston’s Soccer Appetite Is Already Showing
The timing follows a summer in which EaDo became one of Houston’s busiest soccer zones. Hoodline reported that the FIFA Fan Festival reached capacity during the World Cup, while nearby Shell Energy Stadium also filled up for a free viewing event.
For Houston supporters, Everton’s opening-day party offers a smaller, club-specific sequel to that World Cup rush. The first whistle may arrive before most brunch plans, but that is the tradeoff for watching a Premier League season begin with a little local blue-and-white energy.
