John James has cleared the biggest hurdle of his Michigan governor campaign, defeating Perry Johnson in a Republican primary that became a test of President Donald Trump’s influence and the limits of self-funded political firepower.
James received about 49% of the vote to Johnson’s roughly 35%, according to Deadline Detroit, with tens of thousands of ballots still being counted late Tuesday. The victory sends the Shelby Township congressman into the November campaign as the GOP nominee for governor.
Trump’s Endorsement Survived A Nasty GOP Brawl
Trump endorsed James on June 22, giving the congressman a major boost just as absentee voting began. The endorsement helped James withstand Johnson’s expensive challenge, with Johnson lending more than $30 million to his campaign, according to the Associated Press.
Johnson spent the closing weeks portraying James as a liberal posing as a conservative and calling him a lying liberal, per Deadline Detroit. The attacks produced plenty of campaign noise, but not enough votes to overcome James’ name recognition, congressional profile and backing from the White House.
November Matchup Now Pits James Against Benson
The Republican result sets up a major-party governor matchup with Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who won her own primary over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Michigan’s governor’s race is wide open because Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited.
James will now try to turn Trump’s support and Republican enthusiasm into a statewide coalition in a battleground state that backed Trump in 2024 but has maintained a Democratic hold on the governor’s office. The Michigan Department of State has posted the August 4 primary results through its official election results portal, while canvassers continue the certification process.
