UH Mānoa Mechanical Engineering Enrollment Rockets 25% to Record 525 Students

UH Mānoa's Department of Mechanical Engineering just posted its highest undergraduate enrollment ever — 525 students for fall 2026, a 25.3% jump in a single year that has already blown past the program's own five-year growth target. The surge means more Hawaiʻi students are choosing a degree path that feeds directly into the state's shipyards, energy grid and aerospace projects, and it's forcing the department to scramble for more faculty, lab space and teaching support to keep up.

The department had 419 undergraduates in fall 2025 and added 106 more this year, according to the University of Hawaii System. Department chair Joseph J. Brown said the program is working to expand faculty, courses, laboratories, shops and student-support resources to meet the demand. Brown also framed the growth in bigger terms, saying mechanical engineers bridge the digital and physical worlds as artificial intelligence, computation and automation advance.

A Five-Year Goal Cleared Ahead of Schedule

The department adopted a strategic plan in November 2022 that set a five-year goal of topping 450 undergraduates and a 10-year goal of surpassing 600. With enrollment now at 525, the program has already exceeded that five-year target, per the same University of Hawaii System report. Hawaiʻi's growth also outpaces the national trend: undergraduate mechanical engineering enrollment at four-year institutions rose about 11.4% in fall 2025, according to National Student Clearinghouse data cited in the report — meaning Mānoa's jump is running at more than double the national rate.

Mechanical engineering at UH Mānoa now spans aerospace, robotics, advanced manufacturing, energy, transportation and biomedical technologies, according to the university's own account. In Hawaiʻi specifically, the field touches power generation and storage, water and wastewater management, ports and shipyard operations, aircraft and spacecraft maintenance, medical devices, and manufacturing — a breadth the university describes as central to the discipline's appeal.

Hiring, New Labs and a Redesigned Sophomore Course

To handle the influx, the department has hired six new faculty members since January 2023, bringing in expertise in computational modeling and data science, experimental aerospace engineering, robotics, and materials and manufacturing. It has also expanded ME 213, its hands-on sophomore engineering design course, increased teaching assistant support, added capacity in existing courses, and boosted summer course offerings to help students move through the pipeline faster.

Much of that expansion traces back to curriculum moves made years earlier. In April 2021, the department created an Aerospace Engineering Concentration incorporating satellite design and space mission courses in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Space Flight Laboratory, according to University of Hawaiʻi System News, and student participation in campus aerospace projects has since grown to dozens of participants across multiple active initiatives.

Feeding Hawaiʻi's Shipyards and Defense Contractors

Part of the pipeline now runs through Guam. UH Mānoa's Mechanical Engineering department established a 2+2 academic pathway with the University of Guam in 2024, letting students finish their upper-level coursework in Mānoa before entering direct hiring pipelines with the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and its Guam detachment, according to the University of Guam. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard actively recruits mechanical engineers for defense and maritime maintenance work across the Pacific, per the Naval Sea Systems Command.

That kind of employer demand shows up in the numbers. Hawaiʻi employed 530 mechanical engineers as of May 2025, with an annual mean wage of $103,410 and a median wage of $98,740, based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data compiled by Clema.ai. Nationally, federal occupational projections for 2024–2034 estimate mechanical engineering employment will grow 9.1%, generating roughly 18,100 job openings a year. Early-career pay looks more modest by comparison — federal College Scorecard data shows UH Mānoa mechanical engineering graduates earning a median salary of $53,182 one year after graduation, though earnings typically climb as engineers gain experience and pursue Professional Engineer certification.

An Engineering-Heavy Moment for Campus Leadership

The enrollment surge lands at a moment when engineering has an outsized voice in Mānoa's administration. Vassilis L. Syrmos, who officially became UH Mānoa's chancellor on July 1, spent roughly 35 years as an engineering faculty member on the same campus, as Hoodline reported in its story on the chancellor appointment. College of Engineering Dean Brennon Morioka, in office since April 2019, has meanwhile prioritized expanding STEM K-career pathways aimed at bringing local talent back to build Hawaiʻi's infrastructure and technology sectors, according to University of Hawaiʻi System News.

UH Mānoa's engineering roots run deep: the campus granted its first mechanical engineering bachelor's degrees in 1963 and launched its doctoral program in the field in 1985, and it remains the only institution in the state offering graduate engineering degrees. The College of Engineering secured full renewal of its ABET accreditations in September 2022, covering mechanical engineering among its core degree offerings — a credential required for federal engineering roles like those at naval shipyards.

The Open Question: Can Space Keep Up?

None of the department's materials address whether its facilities, including labs and shops in historic Holmes Hall, can keep pace with growth that has already outrun the original five-year projection. With enrollment now closing in on the 10-year goal of 600 students years ahead of schedule, that capacity question looms over how quickly the department can keep adding faculty and shop space to match its own success.
